Nico is a plonker (IMO) to say dangerous driving emanated from one driver and as late as the mid 1990's.

It's only one opinion just as others opinion's of drivers are just that... their opinions., like calling Rubens a winger, or Kimi lazy, or Alonso a prima donna... etc. etc...

These are all simply opinions formed by individuals and shared or disputed in equal measure. <thumbsup>

Well, yeah, I just disagree that Nico is a plonker. He is some what right in his comments (though I do believe that they are somewhat taken out of context) in that F1's standards of safety are so high now that contact between cars is not considered dangerous and one of the most visible proponents of aggressive tactics was schumacher, though Senna was very much inthe same vain. Also note that the more controversial comments are not from Nico himself but is from additional comentary by the author of the article.

Quote:

Schumacher has always been a controversial and divisive figure in the paddock and, while few doubt his talent for racing, many more are dubious about the questionable tactics employed by the German to win races and world championships with a devil-may-care attitude.

Note that the above is not attributed to Nico at all.

Shumi was never the first to be dangerous. Didn't Nico's dad race against Hunt? Correct me if I am wrong but didn't he have a nickname based on some less than safe actions?

From Wilktionary:

plonker (plural plonkers)

1.(British, slang, mildly pejorative) A fool
2.(British, slang, dated) A man who sanctions sexual relationships between his girlfriend and his male friends.

John, which definition did you refered to? 1 or 2? :)

I don't think that anyone driving an F1 car is a fool or anything else. If it's true he has ever said that, well nothing new imo. Having MS as a team-mate could learn Rosberg a few tricks of the trade <devil>

Seriously, I think Rosberg can see that being driver #1 at Mercedes GP is now totally out of the question and that may explain some sort of comments from him.

Yeah, though I don't remember James Hunt pulling off Senna- or Schumacheresque moves. If drivers of the 70s even did half of what those two did, there would have been fatalities in every other race. Even in the 80s, chopping drivers at high speed was considered a no-no. You only have to look at Gilles Villenuve's fatal crash to see what can happen under front to rear contact. The current trend was very much set in the late 80s and early 90s when a certain Ayrton Senna Da Silva had an unusual habit or making contact with other drivers on a regular basis.

I think it was based on his ability to meet the scenery of his own accord when he was a junior driver?

Except that the comments were made at a time when it was asumed Button would stay with Brawn and there was no suggestion that Schumacher would make a comeback.

Yeah, this is just an example of digging up old comments to stir up trouble, though it does demonstrate Nico's naivity when it comes to handling the press. I do think that some of the posts on here are unfair considering that Nico's remarks have been grossly taken out of context.

Honestly Nico's remarks are pretty typical of any racer. They almost uniformly have the attitude that I can do things and it's ok or others need to get over it/pushing someone is hard racing but god forbid someone drive to close to me, or take me out then that person is a crazy maniac who needs to be banned.

New comments today from Nico to Germany's Auto Bild Motorsport magazine:

Nico... "has no doubts that he shares equal status with Michael Schumacher" as the two drivers prepare to begin a new partnership this year. Nico is filled with positivity. Schumacher has openly admitted that he is targeting an eighth crown this season although Rosberg has no worries over being team-mate to his compatriot.

"We have the same status in the team," Nico told Germany's Auto Bild Motorsport magazine. "That's always been like that for Mercedes, that's their philosophy."

Rosberg does admit, however, that he will not settle for second place. "Your team-mate is always the first person with whom you have to measure yourself," he continued. "He is the only one who has the same car. Therefore, it is my goal to be frequently in front of him.

"He's had three years now to recharge his energy and he's totally enthusiastic - that's more important than anything else."

I don't believe there will be equal status at Mercedes. Not with Schumacher/Brawn association. Unless Rosberg beat MS for the first part of the season, it just won't happened.

Personally I have never been really in favour of driver equal status.

Thanks CB. That'll teach me not to work for someone and spend my day on F1 websites to be fully informed. <thumbsup>

Rosbergs comment was that Schumi took F1 to a "new low"

now regardless of when and where he said it

tell which part of that is factually inaccurate.....
