Rosberg: Schumi took F1 to 'a new low'; legitimising dangerous tactics

Nico Rosberg has accused his new team-mate for the 2010 season Michael Schumacher of legitimising dangerous tactics in formula one.

In December, seven-time world champion Schumacher signed a race deal with Mercedes GP that will see him make a sensational comeback to the F1 grid in 2010 after a three-year sabbatical from the top flight of motorsport.

After buying a controlling stake in the champion Brawn GP squad, Mercedes-Benz confirmed it had signed former Williams driver Rosberg to the team.

The young-German has previously warned Schumacher that he might find it tough to return to a sport that has seen radical changes come about in the past two seasons, but it has now emerged that Rosberg blames the seven-time world champion for legitimising underhand tactics and for taking the driving standards in the sport to a new low.

"It is Michael Schumacher who started this, like at Spa, when Mika Hakkinen tried to overtake him and he ran him off the track," Rosberg is quoted as saying by F1 Fanatic shortly after the 2009 season finale in Abu Dhabi.

"When the guy behind has made a decision to pass and the guy in front then moves over, it is very dangerous. You cannot do that.

"That was the first time I remember it being a dangerous issue."

Schumacher has always been a controversial and divisive figure in the paddock and, while few doubt his talent for racing, many more are dubious about the questionable tactics employed by the German to win races and world championships with a devil-may-care attitude.

"Rubens Barrichello, Mark Webber and Kamui Kobayashi did exactly the same thing at Interlagos," said Rosberg.

"With Webber, Kimi Raikkonen lost his front wing, with Kobayashi, Kazuki Nakajima had a massive 'off', which could have been much worse – you can really hurt yourself, marshals and others in that sort of accident.

"With Barrichello, Lewis Hamilton ran into the back of his tyre.

"That was the third time – and it is not allowed to happen."ADNFCR-8000010-ID-19538570-ADNFCR

LOL....what a plonker <roflmao>

A sign that young Nico's cage has been well and truly rattled by the signing of the old master or the naively outspoken opinions of an unsophisticated babe-in-arms?

Rosberg said this at Abu Dhabi. It was first reported a week ago. The comments were made after a generic question was posed by people trying to extract a news worth response.

I read this long ago and dismissed it.

I think young Nico had no idea he was going to have Schumacher as a team mate when he signed for Mercedes... he probably thought Jenson would stay...

I bet he cannot believe his bad fortune... it would be nice if he had his tantrum in private and keep his gob shut and let his driving do his talking... maybe he knows his driving will not be enough... <think>

In light of the timing suggested by Flood's post I think we can dismiss this as slightly malicious journalism.

As to whether he is pleased to find himself as Schumi's team mate surely depends on how positive he chooses to be. Assuming for a moment he doesn't beat the old man he could, Massa-like, take the opportunity to learn from the master. Nico is still young and is a few years away from his peak, and he can make this work for him.

Of course, the upside is that if he does beat Schumacher his reputation will be considerably enhanced no matter that people would likely say that it was only because MS had "lost it" - and were that to happen it's likely there would be some truth to that point of view, although it could be something as innocuous as the car suiting Nico's style better than it suits MS.

Hey, I have no issue with people defending Schumacher but I do think it is rather foolish to label Nico as a plonker. Just note that it was very much in the same tone as blaming Rubens for Austria 2002. Though, one man's passion is another man's poison, I guess.

Nico is a plonker (IMO) to say dangerous driving emanated from one driver and as late as the mid 1990's.

It's only one opinion just as others opinion's of drivers are just that... their opinions., like calling Rubens a winger, or Kimi lazy, or Alonso a prima donna... etc. etc...

These are all simply opinions formed by individuals and shared or disputed in equal measure. <thumbsup>

lol, Nico is young, very young, he may never have seen the sort of intimidatory tacics used by the likes of Senna; Schumacher may have been the first driver *he saw* using them - which is all he claimed.
