The newspaper Bild quotes an unnamed friend as revealing: "Ralf had a concrete offer (to return to F1 in 2010) but it wasn't the challenge he wanted."

Bild said the offer was with one of F1's four new teams, Lotus, Virgin, Campos or USF1.

http://motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=354136&FS=F1

Now, this is Bild, so this article comes with a side order of salt. Furthermore it contradicts itself by quoting Ralf as saying he would jump at the chance to return to F1, before reporting that he has already turned down an offer. Add to that the fact that Ralf has been known to lie about teams' interest in him before (he had no offers for a 2008 drive but insisted throughout the close season that he was in talks with several teams).

However, there is reason to believe that there is a grain of truth in this story, somewhere. Joe Saward reports that in the old days, when he was a journalist, Peter Windsor was a big fan of Ralf's ability and often defended him even when he was derided by other journalists.

It's also worth noting that USF1 have come out in the past and said that they would like an experienced driver to begin with, even if that meant sacrificing their prior aim of running only American drivers. Joe suggests that the offer for Ralf's services - which he turned down - might have come from USF1.

In other USF1 news, Peter Windsor has broken the team's silence by saying that the lack of news from the team in recent weeks was deliberate. Windsor claims USF1 are on course to make their F1 debut in Bahrain in March, and like Virgin their car will be designed using only CFD rather than a wind tunnel.

He wasn't really good enough for his seat for the last several years he spent in F1, what makes anyone think that driving tin-tops (badly) would enhnace his chances of a seat?

Do Renault need a tea boy for the motorhomes?

Renault can do far better than Ralf, as can all the new teams. Ralf has had his time in F1, and after many of his performances over the last 2 years may have had his time in the DTM. I can see Renault giving Romain Grosjean another crack this season should he prove his worth at the first few tests of the year

I dunno about that, he was still pretty competitive with Trulli during his Toyota years, and Jarno is still holding his own in F1 with a drive for Lotus for next year. If Ralf would be willing to drive for a performance-based wage I'd say USF1 could do worse, although the couple of years out of the sport will, like the other Schumacher, have probably affected his ability somewhat.
