Could MS at Mercedes be good for Alonso? Just a thought, a lot has been said of MS's influence at Ferrari whilst Kimi and Massa raced. There was also a lot of nastiness written about MS when MS was at the track in his role of Ferrari ambassador. MS will have no part of Ferrari F1 at all now, he is now part of another team. With this in mind Alonso not only is the main man as an ex-WDC at the team, but he can now carve his own path without sentimental comparison. MS is racing for another team. Alonso IMO has a fantastic opportunity to steal MS's thunder by taking the role MS left behind. If he becomes WDC the tifosi will look on him to beat MS's legacy what will be astonishing is that he could do it whilst MS is still racing but for another team. If Alonso delivers the goods and retires for good with Ferrari, he will be the more enduring legend...............but he needs to win and that is not easy. I wonder if MS had thought of that gamble when he took the Mercedes seat? Alonso has the opportunity that I thought impossible, taking MS's top table place at Ferrari hall of fame.

I should imagine that Ferrari as whole whole will be extremely keen to beat Brawn and Schumacher. Also Mclaren will be veery keen to beat Mercesdes. It's all makes for a very interesting season. |

Well, aren't all the teams and drivers very keen to beat each other anyway? Yes, McLaren will be especially keen to try and beat Mercedes, and no doubt Ferrari will hope to beat Schumacher, but then no team is going to be satisfied unless they are beating someone, or preferably everyone.... |

Unless Alonso manages to win 5 consecutive WDC for Ferrari after several years in the doldrums then I doubt very much that he will overtake Schumi in the Tifosi's long-term affections. |

Not having MS in the team, pulling strings for his 'brother' should help Alonso a great deal. |

There it seems is no room for sentiment in F1... Teams only look to their next Championship... the past is the past. Alonso is sitting pretty, reaching his peak in a team hungry to get back to the top and with the ultimate adversary imaginable... game on |

Sadly for fans of the red team although they have a great driver paring the rest of the team is not anything like as strong as it was in Schumacher's time; not the engineers, not the designers, not the managers, not the strategists. Ferrari are not what they were; sure, they have the resources to do well, even to win titles but they are no longer the super-team that they were and unless something changes the idea of Alonso lifting 5 titles for them is fanciful. IMO, naturally. |

OK so a run of 6 WCC and 5 WDC titles is unlikely but I think they will be stronger than they have been under Kimi and they managed one WDC and two WCC titles with Massa/Kimi

And lets not forget in 2005 and 2006 with the Dream Team still at the helm and MS still racing they won none of the WDC or WCC. They won more in 2007 and 2008, 2009 rules shambles hoodwinked more teams than just Ferrari, game on for 2010. |

We'll see. I just don't think they have personnel in place. Some of their strategic decisions in the past couple of years have been woeful, I mean so school-boyish that the Williams team (who I love dearly but who make me cry a lot) would have been ashamed of them. The fiasco with the electronic pit-lane thingummy that cost them a world title? That would simply never have happened with Ross and Jean at the helm. I'm sorry but I think Ferrari are devolving, the key decision-makers are not of the quality that they were and I think you'll see that reflecting all the way down through the team in the years to come. Ferrari are a rich team so it's likely they'll usually be there or thereabouts, but I suspect that it will increasingly be the latter. I would say I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but I have never liked Ferrari so I'd be happier to be proved right ..... |

don't get me wrong now my main support lies elsewhere on the grid so would I... I just think the Alonso/Ferrari paring will prove to be strong even if not in 2010 |

Despite the fact that he is driving for Ferrari Alonso is the guy I'd like to see lift the WDC, so I hope you're right. I don't say Ferrari are going to be rubbish, but I think they'll not again be the force they were. On another note, I rated Kimi very highly so I will be interested to see how Alonso fairs against Massa, who I had not really thought to be that good. However I will be forced to reappraise my assessment of the man if he gives Alonso as much trouble as he gave Kimi. |

If Alonso puts him in his place there will be plenty to say that either it was because he is not fully recovered after his accident or it is because Kimi only gave 70%, the rest of the time he coasted. I can't see Massa beating Alonso. |
