Alonso in Maranello

Alonso arrives in Maranello. He asked the Ferrari 458 "to be red, please".

Today early in the morning, just after 8am. Fernando Alonso arrived at the gates of the Scuderia Ferrari for his first contact with the new team, although still not as an official member due to his contractual commitments regarding image management, which still tie him to his previous team and his sponsors.

The first meeting was with Stefano Domenicali, who then left him to the technicians, who started to work with the driver on the upcoming season’s programme. Between meetings connected to the new single-seater’s project Fernando visited the wind channel to see the model and worked on the sitting position in the car’s cockpit, while the day ended just after 5pm. Before leaving Maranello, Alonso was received by Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who personally wanted to welcome the Spaniard at Ferrari in a cordially meeting of around half an hour.

Today’s intermezzo was a couple of laps on the Fiorano race track with the 458 Italia, naturally in red: as he couldn’t yet drive a red Formula 1 car Fernando wanted to feel the emotion of driving a Ferrari on the track where all the Prancing Horse’s single-seaters are born and raised.

The tifossi seem to be happy.

And now look at what other media are reporting:

During the meeting, Montezemolo informed Alonso that the team is pushing hard to ensure that there will be a third car on the grid in 2010 with Michael Schumacher as his teammate along with Felipe Massa.

Whoever wrote that article has thrown the MS and fighting for a third car as page filler. There is no way there is going to be 3 cars per team when there will most likely be 5 new teams that can barely afford 2.
Cannot imagine the big teams (they are dwindling) with 3 cars and the rest barely racing with 2.

Going by their recent press releases, Ferrari believe (or at least, want to believe) that some of the new teams will not make the grid, or will fold soon after starting in F1. If that's the case then three-car teams will have to become a reality. But given that Schumacher recently ruled out an F1 comeback I don't see him driving a third Ferrari even if there was one available.

I agree.Firstly, three cars will never happen.Even if the third car cannot score points it can still be used as a rear gunner to protect one of the teams point scoring cars position.
If Ferrari, or Mclaren were running three cars and in a possible 1 2 finish and there was lets say a Brawn car that possibly challenge the first two running in fourth place (he would classified as third) the non points scoring third car could effectively prevent him from challenging the first two cars.
The whole idea is ridiculous.
I can understand Ferrari giving most of the details in the press release, but the part about third cars and Michael Schumacher is pure fanciful speculation.

Alonso at Maranello gives me a good feeling, as I am sick and tired of seing talent being wasted. Time will tell but this could be the best think that can happen to both parties since the Schumacher area.

As far as 3 cars per team subject, not even sure why Montezemello keeps bringing this unworkable option (PR?)

The answer is obvious if you ever study Machiavelli. And it explains exactly what is going on at a political level in Formula 1. .... Ferrari hinted that the reason that manufacturers are withdrawing from F1 is because of Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley. Ferrari did not name names but the implication was thicker than icing on a wedding cake. The team seems to believe that Mosley and Ecclestone drove the manufacturers out of the sport in an effort to break the power of FOTA. With a group of strong manufacturer-led teams working together, FOTA was strong. With a bunch of weak new teams, FOTA is not ....

The chances are that some of the new teams (and perhaps even some of the older ones as well) will end up being beholden to Mr E and that, therefore, is the danger for FOTA. So, strange that it may seem, it is actually better for Ferrari and others to try to talk down the new teams so that they fail and thus do not get a voice in FOTA business. If the numbers of cars falls too far, then three-car teams is the answer…

It seems that MS already was at that moment looking for a wheel. And probably Luca tried his best to have a third card.

Not according this.

"In Abu Dhabi, when Ross asked me if I could imagine returning to F1, I felt that I wasn't ready for it. But only two weeks later, when he called me once again, I realised that my old passion was returning. Suddenly I was on fire again. For me, the imagination to be back in a F1 car and to compete for the world championships is exciting and extremely inspiring."

The time margin is quite small. Abu Dhabi was on 01/11 and Alonso's visit to Maranello 06/11. Perhaps MS started to change his mind just after the GP and talked to Luca, who knows.

"I have decided to return to Formula One. Mercedes GP and I agreed on teaming up for the coming 3 seasons. And to be honest, I'm already super excited by the prospect to be back in a F1 cockpit.

I don't want to deny at all that the idea of a German F1 team extremely tempts me. I guess every German driver would feel this way. And of course it plays a major role that I again can work together with Ross at Mercedes GP. Above all,
