I guess we don't know what really happened at Mclaren. But I was thinking about Hungaroring 2007.

Hypothetically speaking here,

Suppose some teams did have 3 cars next season, and others had 2. In the Constructor's Championship, to make it even, would only 2 drivers be able to get Constructor's points (i.e. the best 2 finishers for a team in a race, for instance).

I guess that would be how it would work. So if Ferrari finished 1-2-3 in a race, Ferrari would only score 18 constructors' points. Presumably each driver would get the points to add to their world championship total.

That said, in the 1980s there were a few occasions when teams had officially only entered one car into the championships, yet ran a second car in some races. On the rare occasion that the "unofficial" second car finished in the points, neither driver nor constructor was awarded points. <think>

There is a problem with that however.Effectively the team could have a sacraficial car in each race, or two races. This car could be mapped for absolute outright performace with no thought to preserving the engine for four races. When the engine did blow up, thet would simply change the engine, accept the penalty for the next race, and this car would then be preserved for the following rtaces. Do you get my point.
Even the SECU is capable of holding six different engine mapping configurtaions.

The third car would effectively be a test rig.

How do you run three cars on a budget of 40Million and what about garage space?

As said already, this announcement is more of a face-saving excercise for Ferrari (and possibly MS) than a genuine request. They know full well that the FIA will reject their request and if it was accepted would MS really want to spend another season away from his family, struggling to compete with people 15 or even 20 years younger, fitter, sharper...

F1 is a highly demanding sport. MS's neck can't be the only thing that's going to suffer. These cars have almost no suspension. Can you imagine the stress placed on the vertebrae, the spinal disks, the whole skeleton? The damage done to the kidneys by the constant shaking is enough to stop any driver from continuing after 40. MS's eyesight and reflexes would not be what they were when he was 30, let alone 20. He would struggle, there is no question about it.

I think it's time for MS's fans to accept that he's not coming back and that if he does, he won't be the same. Rather remember his feats (controversial or not) than to long for more.

Thing is John, I keep reading your sig as "154 FLAPS"

I can remember the one when he punched Coulthard at Spa - but 153 others?

Two experts have told Michael Schumacher fans not to get too disheartened despite the seven time world champion calling off his formula one return.

The 40-year-old German wanted to fill in for Ferrari's injured Felipe Massa, but his own lingering neck injury meant returning at Valencia next weekend would have endangered his health.

Schumacher played down his motorcycle testing crash in February, but Germany's Bild newspaper now claims he fractured bones in his head and neck, as well as damaging an artery supplying blood to the rear of his head.

"He was lucky he did not have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair," the newspaper said.

Former grand prix driver Christian Danner, however, believes Schumacher will still want to return if his injuries heal.

"Perhaps he'll be at Monza," the veteran of 47 grands prix is quoted as saying, referring to the Italian grand prix in the middle of September.

Michael needs to come out and categorically say Thanks for the intrest and support, but say in the words of the dragons "I'm out"
