A push by Ferrari to allow teams to run three cars in Formula 1 next year could yet allow Michael Schumacher to return to the sport.

That was the firm hint dropped by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo on Tuesday night, just hours after Schumacher's F1 comeback was called off for now because of a neck injury.

Di Montezemolo believes that Schumacher has plenty to offer F1 still, even though he is 40-years-old, and he has said he will not ease off in his efforts to get the rules changed so Ferrari can run three cars next year - with Schumacher a possibility to fill for as many races as he wants.

In an interview that will appear in La Stampa on Wednesday, di Montezemolo said...

I was very surprised when the news came out that Schumacher would replace the injured Massa, but could see how he could return for the final few races...

As it turns out he was not fully fit to do even that, despite dropping 4kg and putting in the testing ang way he could... So I am sceptical of a full return for 2010.

Besides, if Ironside veto'd a test in the F60 for Schumacher because he feared lost points, he is hardly going to approve the use of 3 Ferrari's next season to do the same...

I think this story from Ferrari is just their way of showing their disappointment at the news Schumacher is not now able to race.

Teams running 3 cars, with 12 teams running next season?

This is madness!

That is the thing... Ferrari as I read the article are requesting the option be made available to each team, but as you say if all teams decide to run 3 cars the grid and the pit lane will not cope...

If it is expected that only teams that want or can afford to run 3 will, well as I said why would Williams et al, agree when it directly effects their point scoring ability...

Are the fans in general ready to accept the possibility of an all Ferrari, McLaren or RBR podium.

This is why I believe it is just Ferrari frustrated that Schumacher cannot now race but refusing to accept he will never comeback.

It is not a helpful attitude for their current drivers.

But if Schumi is injured so that he cannot race now, then what makes Ferrari think he'll be all right next season?

err.. because people get better? <think>

you may as well ask why they think Massa will be OK next year.

Massa's younger and will heal better. Schumi has age to contend with as well.

Massa and Schumacher suffered very different types of injuries. Massa's injuries, although severe, are not so directly affected, by gforces.
Also Massa's injuries do not affect muscle strength's.

That's the thing, I don't believe they truly do think he will return... asking for something (3 cars) they know Ironside (and others) will object to shows they do not really expect to get them... but it demonstrates they where serious about asking Schumacher to drive in the first place...

As Iberia says... we all know the moment has passed and it is time for Ferrari to move on... look to 2010 and beyond

Anyway, 3 cars per team? No way, not enough room to accomodate everyone.
I think Ferrari trying to have a "dream team "Massa-Raikkonen-Alonso". This is all talk, It won't happened. Next subject...

Hypothetically speaking here,

Suppose some teams did have 3 cars next season, and others had 2. In the Constructor's Championship, to make it even, would only 2 drivers be able to get Constructor's points (i.e. the best 2 finishers for a team in a race, for instance).

I am not completely sure that is so... I believe Alonso's problem was with the team not his team mate... it just got soured towards the end... I don't believe he would be opposed to having Lewis as team mate again.

I could be wrong.
