• Luca Badoer's return to F1 means there will now be two drivers in the field who competed in the 1993 season. Both he and Rubens Barrichello made their debuts that year.

• Badoer's promotion to F1 in 1993 came after a title-winning F3000 campaign the year before, where he took the crown with four wins.

• Badoer's F1 return means he will be the oldest driver in the field - taking over that honour from Barrichello. The Italian is currently 38 years old.

• His promotion to Ferrari race seat means Badoer will still only have driven for Italian teams in F1. He has previously raced for Scuderia Italia, Minardi and Forti Corse.

• Badoer is Ferrari's longest serving test driver, having originally begun work for them back in 1998.

• Despite having competed in 48 grands prix, Badoer never scored a point. His best finish was 7th in the 1993 San Marino Grand Prix.

• Badoer's failure to score a point gives him the distinction of being the driver with the most race starts who has not achieved that feat.

• His best grid position is 12th, which he delivered for Minardi at the 1995 Hungarian Grand Prix. In the race he finished 8th.

• Luca Badoer famously broke down in tears at the 1999 European Grand Prix after his car stopped with gearbox failure as he seemed en route to fourth place.

• Badoer's near 10-year gap between his last race at the 1999 Japanese Grand Prix and his return in Valencia is not quite as big as the 10 years and three months between Jan Lammers' races in the 1982 Dutch and 1992 Japanese Grand Prix.

Hate...? hardly...

but many have questioned his ability before this announcement, others have only his past record to go on...

I'll wait an see how he does my self, safe in the knowledge that, short of him getting pole, fastest lap and the win, that Schumacher would have done better <thumbsup>

Not quite as illustrious a resume as Michael Schumacher .... but I really hope Luca scores a point.

I believe if he did so, the record would go to Brett Lunger, who started 34 GPs between 1975 and 1978 without scoring a point.

I don't hate him, I just think he's a pretty poor driver, and while he may have done lots of testing, there's a gulf between testing and racing. Alex Wurz has proved that several times. Gene would have been a better choice.

Forget past events, if you are a team, who would you prefer to have driving if push comes to shove? A seven-time champion who retired in 2006, or a lifetime test driver who has never scored a point, only did 40-odd races, and hasn't raced an F1 car for ten years? Granted, Badoer will see it as a reward for all his help over the years, however I cannot help but think that he's going to fare no better than Schumacher would have done, or most likely not even as well.

I still reckon the whole thing is a setup by the FIA and Bernie to help ticket sales after Renault's ban, and the Ferrari would have had Badoer pencilled in for the drive from the start, with MS only driving if he was fit enough, rather than the other way around....

Agreed <thumbsup>

In fact, I hope he scores many more than that. I believe that some of the comments about Badoer getting the drive have been on the disrespectful side, but it probably has a lot do with the disappointment that Schumi has had to pull out of what was an eagerly anticipated return.

..and Badoer. The guy hasn't raced for 10 years? Should we said he's going to get pole and win?

If you go to 'my assistant' on the right of the screen, then select 'my last ten posts', then you'll probably get seven examples.

But how? How have I ACTUALLY been disrespectful?

Why should we only talk about Schumi’s successes? Should we brush his cheating etc under the carpet? How is talking about his cheating being disrespectful? It was him that cheated, he made his bed and he must lay in it.

In many ways Hitler was a great leader, but is it disrespectful to talk about his failings? Go figure…

Why? Did he cause the injury to Shumi's neck?

That's ALL you talk about though when it comes to Shumi. It's like you cannot recognize his accomplishments for all the cheating he did (which I'm sorry to inform you is not nearly as much as you state).

Let's do this. There is a driver who has been successful in F1 and has also cheated, and has been caught driving for a team that cheated, has been punished for some incidents, and not for others.

This could easily describe Lewis or Shumi, or Alonso for that matter the problem when you see that it's Shumi you immediately go on the offensive screaming what a cheat he is and that he's a total scum, when it’s Lewis you go on the offensive on what a cheat Shumi is and that he is scum.

We all know Shumi cheated, we all know Lewis cheated. How about we agree on that an move on.
