It could have been Géne... younger than Badoer, better record in F1, and last drove in 2004 as opposed to 1999 for Luca...

However, Badoer it is... I'm sure he will give it his best... good news for the championship contenders all the same.

Agreed Gene did an ok job when he stepped in for Schumacher in Monza 03 and 2004. He was about 3 tenths off of Montoya generally and also he beat Badoer most of the time when they were teamamtes at Minardi in 1999. He can feel a bit agrieved i'd say.

Badoer is only confirmed for Valencia, not beyond. Gene may yet have his chance, Luca's outing could be a one-off as a thank you for his years of service.

Kind of strange that they'd put Luca in for Gene's home race (and potentially vice versa) if that was the case, though.

that might just be the unfortunate position in the calendar of the relative GP's...

They want to give Luca a thankyou drive before switching to Gene... unfortunately the first GP is in Spain... but it would look silly racing Gene only to sit him out for Monza...

Who knows how Ferrari think... <think>

Andy, there has been no logic in F1, everyone knows that.

I don't think any single person has ever changed their viewpoint throughout the years that these discussions have been going on, nor even accepted that other's viewpoints may have some validity even if they might differ from their own.

True...

although as a long time anti-fan I discovered things about Ron Dennis only after he departed from F1 that had I known previously I would probably been one of his fans... go figure

Thing is how long will M Schumachers neck need??

Could he attempt to do a race nearer the end of the season if Massa is still not ready?

If they use Badoer for one race then switch to Gene, Schumacher will not be able to race at all. Each team is only allowed to use four drivers per season.

But will they use Gene at all??

I still feel we might see M Schumacher in a Ferrari yet. <think>

Really? Pray tell.

Maybe I too can become an ex-anti-fan.

One thing I've been pondering all along....

Schumacher isn't the sort of person to complete if he doesn't stand a good chance of winning.

FIA probably wanted something to deflect attention away from Massa in case he got worse rather than better.

Ticket sales for Valencia were rubbish.

F1 would do anything to drum up more sales and more interest.

Badoer is slow and uninteresting, but dependable and far more likely to be race fit.

Anyone else think that the plan was always to run Badoer, and the powers that be bunged Ferrari and MS some wonga just to see if MS might possibly be up to the job, and in the meantime coincidentally create a media and ticket frenzy?

<grrr>

I bet there's an awful lot of people on the Valencia ticke hotline booking cancellations!!

Agreed. Bernie is a true master.

(Valencia tickets: 45.000 sold at this moment, near 20.000 between Schumacher and Badoer).
