Kind of ironic that BMW gave little indication of what they were up to until they had made the turn. |

Exactly! BMW have already been made to look stupid by Williams and would look even more stupid if Sauber bought the team back and actually managed to score some decent points The BMW F1 experiment has been an embarrassing ego trip that has ended in catastrophic failure. “We aim to win the championship within 3 years” Yeah, don’t let the door hit you on the arse Mario |

Hey, I just think car companies should stick to what they are good at, instead of cynically playing the market. Incidentally, I don't like the Porsche Cayanne either, and that is from someone who pretty much worships Porsches. Lets face it, the Rover debacle was disgraceful. Rover was doing OK until BMW got involved. OK, Honda walking away didn't help, but they ditched their shareholding in rover for a reason. Also, I think my point about BMW saving face is valid. I mean, look at Brawn, Honda look daft for withdrawing from F1 now that their former team is successful. |

To be fair, BMW were looking pretty good until 6 months ago. Not so much a failure as a bit of a bad patch. My point is that they haven't even given a chance of recovery and now they are killing the former Sauber team. |

The problem was that BMW set themselves up for a fall by being arrogant and coming out with ridiculous statements. They tried to bully Frank, he had none of it but at least his staff are still employed! BMW should do the decent thing and sell the team, they could show they have a bit of ‘racing spirit’ left and a bit of dignity. But like you say, they are now trying to kill the small man, pathetic |

This is better than the telly... (gets chair and pop corn) Rover was in a better shape when sold than when bought... what happened after was the real disgrace... The former Sauber team was dead when Peter Sauber Sauber sold it... as for saving face, BMW will not give F1 a second thought come the 2nd of November... |

Then how come the Rover 75 was dubbed "The Last Chance Saloon"? May be it is just me but it is a hell of a coincidence that the X5 came out towards BMW's tenure at Rover. Also, if BMW did such a good job at Rover, how come they sold Rover for a quid and off loaded the debts to the Phoenix consortium? Anyway, if the Sauber team was in such bad shape, how come BMW bought them? |

Are you being deliberately forgetful or is your knowledge really so bad... Rover was sold for a nominal £10 (not a 'quid' but hey lets not quibble over something like the facts) because the state of Rover was it was loosing money had over fist... long before BMW bought it and as it proved long after... despite BMW paying £800million to buy it and investing another £1000million during it's tenure. BMW delayed the launch of the 75 because it wanted to improve the quality of the car... it was the best Rover produced in decades... True, one of the principle attractions of the Rover Group was it's Land Rover division... it made huge financial sense to buy Rover for £800million and have instant access to over 50years of knowledge rather than spend the £800million it would have cost just to develop one single new 4x4 model from scratch.... that was genius, The other prime reason for the purchase was of course access to front wheel drive/small car technology... BMW invested heavily in the Oxford plant and the new MINI so hem they decided to ditch the money pit that was Rover they re-cooped their investment by selling Land Rover to Ford for €3billion and kept forthcoming new MINI and switched production from Longbridge to the ultra modern Cowley plant.... again genius. It is deals like that which have ensured BMW are still independant today... more than can be said of Porsche

Hey, i didn't say that what BMW did didn't make good business sense. Developing the profitable parts of the company certainly worked out for them. It is just that they seemed to forget that there were thousands of people jobs at stake in their igonrance of the main rover brand. I'm not saying that rover should have been a charity case but they pretty much planned to dump that part of the company without warning. It was only when there was public outcry and government intervention that a solution was found. Of course, it wasn't the right solution but the rot could have been stopped if the right investments had been made earlier instead of carrying on down a oneway path to redundancy. |
