Michael Schumacher will receive 1.000.000 € for each race as substitute of Felipe Massa. In addition, his new contract for 2010 with Ferrari will be of 10.000.000 €.

40.000 of 75.000 tickets sold at this moment for the Valencian GP. One week ago (before MS) only 30.000 were sold.

it's why he can make 1M € and why Bernie was happy to see him back.

Normally I find it unpalatable how much sports stars get paid. But whereas IMO some average (for their league) footballer getting 60k a week seems like the world gone mad, MS will bring in more money than they are paying him just in additional Ferrari sponsorship.

If he wins a race then the additional revenue and positive brand enhancement is pure gold considering what a lousy season they have had so far.

That's a direct link to him driving their car and nothing else.

Unlike not some donkey of an average footballer getting overpaid as they are basking in the glory of other better players.

Heck, having MS racing (with Alonso out) is helping F1 sales right now. I can see Bernie chipping in to help cover the costs and ensure he keeps racing.

One million per race and another million per victory is what I've read in written paper.

There are also a lot of references in Internet.

I think that the NotW showed us this week that the media is always ready to print anything regardless of whether it is true...

I doubt he is doing it for free but I also doubt it is the mega money some report... but whatever it is it is not enough... <thumbsup>

I have to say I don’t agree

Again people seem to be trying to justify things involving Michael Schumacher. One rule for him, one rule for the rest. It’s not ok for a pro footballer to get paid big money but it’s ok for Schumacher because he’ll increase ticket sales and sponsors?

So what has David Beckham been doing all his career and do you agree with his wage? Interesting question….

It has gone too far now surely

Don't F1 drivers bask in the glory of the engineers, designers, financiers and mechanics?

I agree Matt,

Loyalties aside, in truth mega salaries are hard to justify when compared to normal peoples salaries and when comparing the actual job they do.. but we must accept that the salaries are driven by the sport themselves, In football the sheer numbers of fans willing to spend on their team loyalties mean it is big business and attracts big money...

F1 is not the norm in motor sport but the money generated means a few drivers will earn mega money.

I think the difference between racing drivers and footballers is that while they both have relatively short careers, football is rather less dangerous that motorsport. Every time a driver sticks his lid on and goes racing, he could end up dead, and through no fault of his own or anyone else's. Yes, footballers can sometimes get nasty injuries, but they usually get massively over-inflated compensation as a result. In my opinion, the salaries of football players are an insult to those who play in either rugby code, who stand a fairly high chance of a broken back or neck due to mistimed tackles, collapsing scrums, etc.

In any case, if Schumacher is earning a million Euros per race, that's actually less than he was getting in 2006. And when Mansell drove for Williams for a few races in 1994, Frank was paying him £900K a race.

And if you think that's bad, look at what the Americans pay pitchers just for chucking a ball!!

but you could argue that a top footballer in a top team plays 40-50 games a season between all the championships plus internationals... and although maybe not risking death each game they do potentially risk a career ending injury.
