Schumacher to make F1 return in Spain

By Steven English  Wednesday, July 29th 2009, 16:51 GMT

Ferrari plans to draft in seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher to replace Felipe Massa until the Brazilian is fit enough to return to the cockpit.

According to Ferrari's website, Schumacher has said he is ready and will undergo a specific training programme over the next few days before being confirmed as Massa's replacement for the European Grand Prix at Valencia on August 23.

He has nothing to lose - he can just enjoy himself.

Great PR for F1.

i don't take sucker bets ;)

Not my idea of a good choice. Should give someone a chance to prove their capable instead.

I suppose Ferrari don't have a title to win this year so they can put whoever they damn well like in the car. But I have a feeling Schumi's return will be a massive disappointment for those who remember him at his best.

Good for Valencia, though, especially after the blow of potentially losing Renault from the race.

Perhaps this will finally wake up Kimi who should be performing at his best these days since he is in his prime rather than just phoning it in like he has been the last 2 seasons. I am sure he won't want to be beaten by a 40 year old who hasn't raced in 3 years.

I'm stunned! As a big MS fan I'm not unhappy about the prospect of seeing him in action again. However, I can't help thinking it's been too long, and he's not going to be fit enough to be anything like as competative as he was before he retired. Hopefully it won't be embarrassing for him, be bloody funny if he beats Kimi though!

I'd like to see Kimi's face and the face of Sir Frank Williams! Two different looks entirely.

Pretty much agree.

I'm surprised by this though. Didn't think Shumi would have done it.

WOW.

Sorry but M Schumacher would not be coming back if he thinks he will make a fool of himself.

He will be fit and ready for the GP in 4 weeks time.

He is not going to win a race in the Ferrari but i bet he keeps everyone on their toes.

I am sure the paddock and Lewis will be looking forward to this race.

M Schumacher will have been driving the new car at the Ferrari test circuit i am sure of it before now as Ferrari do still employ Schumacher

If i was Kimi i would be asking for an early retirement <roflmao>

I want to know how he's going to get race-fit and used to the car! 2 week enforced shut down leaves him 2weeks. No testing in this year's spec car so it'll all be on simulators presumably*

He has a huge hill to climb for Valencia!

*I'm presuming the FIA won't make a special dispensation!

I can't remember who said it, but the line was something like "as competitive as I am, I will want to ....."

I think he is fit enough. The first race will be a bit touchy, but after that wahoo.

This could be just the thing Kimi needs, or not.

Anyway, watch for ticket sales around the world to go up. And never ever expect Michael to just do ok. The greatest ever is about to get back behind the wheel.
