About that though Alonso had hinted that who he will be driving for next year is still in the air, my conclusion? He's going to Ferrari.

It won't happen for the same reason that Michael Schumacher won't be able to drive for them (not that he would probably want to anyway). Alonso is not registered as a 'spare' driver for Ferrari for the season, so he'd not be allowed to race for them if they 'borrowed' him from Flabio. Also, changing spare drivers has certain limits too.

Even if he did race for them there's nothing to say he will do well. He will be coming into a completely new car and environment with only a couple of days worth of free practice to familiarise himself.

And working with a pit crew and mechanics who are not keen on telling him Ferrari secrets............or did they forget some of his previous emails <whistle>

If he's on his way there anyway....

Maybe Renault should be banned for the rest of the season. <think>

Serriously it most likey won't happen, but if it did what a driver pairing. Alonso might wake Kimi up, and Fredo is no soluch.

As I understand it you don't have to register your reserve drivers in any official way. The rule is that a team is only allowed to use four drivers in each season, who those drivers are isn't decided upon until they actually have to race.

For example, Red Bull have actually had three reserve drivers this season: Coulthard, Hartley and Alguersuari. So Alonso (or Schumacher) could take the vacant Ferrari seat, it would simply mean that either Badoer or Gene wouldn't get to race at a later stage this season.

Yes, it appears that the rules have either changed, or I got the wrong end of the stick. I'm sure that at some point you could only nominate a certain couple of spare drivers who werre the only ones allowed to fill in for absent 'main' drivers. Perhaps that ruling was about in the days of the 'third car on Friday' practice?

Alonso has declared in the Spanish media " I will not take te spot of an injured driver and colleague. If Renault still cannot race in Valencia, I will stay home".

I think it's just too complex with sponsors/contractual constraint. It just won't happen.
