That's very encouraging news. I'm cautiously optimistic that Felipe will be back - maybe even sooner than we could have hoped.

I hope he makes a swift and full recovery .... it would be a miracle if he could drive again this year. Think his injury will take a long time to heal, let alone be up to the rigours of racing and G forces.

Such big accidents can have a huge psychological impact ... even if he regains physical fitness, he might not want to race again ... which would be fair enough.

Fingers crossed, though.

I don't think you can ignore the psychological impact.

If it's driver error and they smack a barrier, then it's probably easier to get back into the car. With such a freak accident, there's the what if? factor which might play heavily on his mind.

These guys face death every time they get into a car. Remember Kubica's prang? I know he wasn't injured, but he did have one hell of a smash and was begging to be allowed to drive as soon as possible. Racing is their life, it will take more than a life-threatening accident to put them off.

Massa apparently can't remember what happened, would this not make him less afraid to race?

It's pretty obvious he'd have no memory of the accident, he was unconscious.

I do however expect that he'll be desperate to get back in the car. Doubt he'll drive again this year. He probably won't even be fit to train for a month or so let alone drive.

The body and mind needs time.

I hope he does get a chance to return though, but I'd rather see him come back 100% ready than just look bad for the rest of the year due to poor health.

Quite right the body needs time ... I remember Nelson Piquet wanting to race in the 87 San Marino GP after a horror crash at Tosa. Sid Watkins would not let him drive, becuase Nelson only had one shoe on whilst talking to him

He was never the same driver again after that crash, even though he race for another 4 years in F1...

thats the point i was making earlier

broken bones can be fixed and drivers come back as good as ever but head injuries are completley different

my personal opinion is that Massa is done as a competitive F1 driver, i hope i'm wrong but i've seen it many times over

Sadly you may be right, but there are exceptions, Mikka springs to mind.

We probably won't find out this season though.

Let's wait and see before pronouncing the death of his competitve career. Obviously it will not be possible to just get back in and pick up where he left off, but as Rob said, it has happened before that a driver suffers a serious injury and comes back. Plus, the signs are that the recovery is going well, better than thought.

Nice <thumbsup>

But, I can't help thinking, if Kimi had left a longer message, Massa might have gone back into a coma! <sleep>

<roflmao>

That was really nice.

Can't think of anyone who doesn't like Massa, especially with the grace he showed in defeat last year.

I think Joe Saward summed it up best:

"People will long remember the way he dealt with defeat in Brazil last year. It marked him as one of life’s real champions, even if his name never appears on the list of World Championship winners."

Nice, Lewis' message especially seemed heartfelt.
