The was a news report tonight saying that due to damage to Massa's left eye, he may nothe able to race again.
It's early days, but that's not too promising.

To be honest after thinking about this it is early days.

You would never have thought Niki Lauda or Alex Zanardi would ever race again after their accidents esp Zanardi's so i do feel its too soon to predict.

Yes the accidents i have noted are different but with surgery as good as it is now alot more is possible.

The main thing is he seems to be over the worst which is a blessing.

The latest news coming from Budapest is anything but good news, as the doctors from the AEK hospital revealed Felipe Massa suffered damage to his left eye during his crash in the Hungarian GP qualifying session. Under the circumstances, they announced there is an increased risk of the Brazilian driver never being able to race again. A press conference is to be held by the hospital's representatives later this evening.

The news came as a shock to the Scuderia, as it was initially believed the 2008 Formula One vice-champion would recover in time to make the grid in the late stages of 2009.

“He has suffered some damage to the eye. We don't know whether he'll be able to race again,” hospital's professor Robert Veres from Budapest was quoted as saying to the Hungarian media earlier today.

In addition to his announcement, Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo today visited the AEK hospital to check up on his driver. When asked what are the chances of seeing Massa back in the Ferrari cockpit, the Italian official avoided giving a clear answer.

“The most important thing is the recovery of the man, not the driver. We have now returned to Maranello but tomorrow we will be back with Felipe,” Di Montezemolo was quoted as saying by the Gazzetta dello Sport, while also admitting the Scuderia will not take long until considering a replacement for the Brazilian driver.

The doctors are to further examine Massa's left eye, but such an investigation is not yet possible due to the Ferrarian's induced coma. He is expected to come out of it during the course of tomorrow, after which he will undergo another series of tests.

Also. as reported by Brazil's TV Globo, Massa will likely be transfered to Paris' Pitie-Salpetriere hospital later this week, as the French medical centre “has links with the FIA and has treated patients including Michael Schumacher and Ronaldo.”

I hope he proves them wrong just like Hammond from Top Gear surprised everyone with his amazing recovery.

If his eye is damaged and he canno longer accurarely judge distance, then his career in the top flightis effectively over.
However, let's wait and see, hopefully he'll make a full recovery

The hospital has since denied that there is any evidence of eye damage:

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77383

Medical director of the AEK Hospital, Peter Bazso, says "We can give no positive neither negative answer to this, because at this stage the vision cannot be examined." Apparently Massa is still unable to open his left eye, which is obviously a cause for concern but it isn't the grave injury that has been suggested.

I would suggest that all reports are treated with a little bit of caution, the reports from the last few days have all been very confused.

That's good to hear. Be nice to see him back on the grid.

It seems rather sad that despite being in a modern, uncensored Western Bloc country, news on Felipe's condition can be so disparate (is that a word, or even the right one?) when it's not exactly rocket science. If he hasn't been able to open his eye yet (and there's probably a hell of a lot of swelling around it) then the docs won't know if there is any damage or not, or what sort of damage there may be. If I recall correctly, one of the fractures to his skull was around the left eye area, so it seems sensible to hypothesise that he won't be able to open it for several days, and that there's probably some superficial damage. Whether or not there's anything significant or lasting will only be known when doctors have been able to examine it more thoroughly.

Fingers crossed.

Well, it's great to hear that he can speak again, and that he's able to ask questions about what happened. That answers (assuming that it's correct of course) the first question, which would be is there any brain damage and how bad would it affect him. Surely this indicates that any damage in this area was superficial.

What's the betting that one of his first questions was when he could get back in the car?

I guess that with a compression fracture to the left ocular orb there will be significant chance of damage to the eye - detached retina, muscle damage etc.. But as Norbs says, let's wait for definitive news.

In the same article quoting this, his doctor is also quoted as saying that his injury is still life threatening......

Having seen similar head/brain injuries in the past (Steve Park and Jerry Nadeau for example) I think it’s highly unlikely Massa will return and if he does he won’t be the same

"I have no doubt Felipe will race again," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I'm sure of that.

"The situation is still delicate, but I believe his life is not in danger anymore. From the beginning I felt that the trauma wasn't as extended as it was believed, but the improvements of the last hours have gone beyond our wildest expectations."

Altmann added that fears that Massa had suffered damage to his left eye, which was opened for the first time since the accident yesterday, proved to be unjustified.

"Stimulated by the physiotherapist, he showed he knows left from right and he has full awareness of distance and depth," said Atlmann. "And his memory loss regards a short time.

"His eye has been opened, with care because it is still swollen, and he has said he can see. His vision has not weakened.

"He gave appropriate answers in three languages: Portuguese, Italian, and English. That means that the brain's cognitive area is fine."

Ferrari has confirmed that Massa will be moved out of intensive care later today, and team principal Stefano Domenicali has said that his rate of recovery is impressive.

"It's a fantastic improvement," Domenicali told the newspaper. "Only three days after the crash he's made encouraging progress.

"He recognized me, I greeted him and I brought him all the team's and the fans' warmth and support. He replied to me in Italian, after he had spoken to his family in Portuguese. He told me he can't remember anything that had happened: that's a good thing."

Domenicali added that Massa's place at Ferrari will be kept open for him when he is fit enough to return.

"The data is encouraging, but in these situations it's better to be prudent and take one step at a time," he said. "We want him to recover as soon as possible.

"I confirmed to him that we are looking forward to his return soon, that the car is his, and that as soon as he's ready he'll be back with us."
