Yes, it's the loose wheel. Renault apparently released Alonso knowing that there was a problem.

Given the events of the past week I can see why the authorities are taking a very dim view of this kind of thing, though I think excluding the team is a bit harsh. Similar things have happened in the past with the consequences not being so severe.

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons here, does anyone think Alonso might make an appearance at Valencia anyway .... in a Ferrari? <think>

Do people not realise how annoying this is when you're trying to run a Fantasy F1 game?!

that could be the call of the century right there

it didn't occur to me at first but it could fall into place, even if it's just a one race deal

Nex year's Ferrari sponsor, Santander, could make the deal and Flav would have a heart attack!

Not having Fred in a car at a race in Spain is crazy.... although I can understand the angle the FIA are coming from considering the timing , I do feel it is harsh...

As long as we have pitstops there is an element of human error involved, however the FIA will want to know why Alonso did an entire lap knowing the wheel could come off at any time ...

It was a real shame as Fred could have bagged some usefull points today ..

:(

1. F1 politics and the commercial drive may overturn the Renault decision.

2. If Alonso flying wheel was unsafe (which it was) why no penalty for a very unsafe release of Mark Webber into the path of Kimi. We've seen less dangerous releases punished.

Apparently Alonso did not know that the wheel was loose as the team did not tell him, so he thought it was just a puncture.

As for the Webber/ Kimi incident the precedent was set last year in Valencia with Ferrari only being fined even though they released Massa into Sutil's path

If they were then i cant remember it. My bad if they were ... I do remember that Vettel and Red Bull were given a reprimand and a fine for the same thing a few races ago.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read it.

Well at the risk at sounding insensitive, Massa could be out the rest of the season. Alonso to Ferrari for the rest of the season is possible. just depends on how bad Ferrari want him and how bad Reanult want to hang on to him. They got a month to work it out.
