Michael Schumacher drives Formula One to distractionFormula One waited with bated breath last night to discover whether it is about to witness the biggest comeback since Ol’ Blue Eyes. Even Frank Sinatra would be eclipsed by the welter of publicity that would follow Michael Schumacher if he agrees to step back into a Ferrari racing car for the European Grand Prix next month. ''''''''William Hill, the bookmaking firm, already quoting odds of 8-11 that the German would be in a Ferrari this season and 5-4 that he would win a pole position

will viewing figures go up? <sarcasm>

Michael Schumacher returns to Formula One with Ferrari
Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher will replace injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa for the rest of the season. Earlier on Wednesday the Bild newspaper in Germany had reported that Schumacher would come out of retirement and drive for his former team, for whom he currently works in advisory capacity.

Ferrari confirmed the move on Wednesday afternoon saying the German would replace the injured Brazilian driver Felipe Massa until the end of the season. Schumacher said on his own website: "The most important thing first: thanks God, all news concerning Felipe are positive. I wish him all the best again.

"I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe.

"Though it is true that the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation. But as the competitor I am I also very much look forward to facing this challenge."

Wow. I have to say I'm amazed.

I predict it to be a massive failure for Michael, but will be worth watching all the same.

I think he'll do ok, not brilliantly as of yore, but well enough that he doesn't embarass himself and well enough to keep Kimi on his toes.
