Assuming he pulls through surgery OK, could this be a career ending injury for him? Concussions are nasty things.

my estimate would be that he misses the the rest of the season

head injuries can't be rushed, especially in motorsport

True. I've seen many a career ending concussion to hockey players - although that is usually after several concussions over time, due to big body checks or being hit pucks, as opposed to being hit by an 800g bit of metal at 100+ mph.

any physicists among us who can estimate the weight the spring would have been at 100+mph?

played footie tonight and took a ball in the left eye, can barely see out of it right now, must have been in empathy.

The spring would have had about 1600 joules of kinetic energy.

I know it can happened from other cars, but in this case is the FIA going to check the Brawn cars to ensure this is not going to happened again?

Not a popular opinion I'm sure, but in my opinion both Brawn cars should be disallowed from racing today unless they can demonstrate that such a failure will not happen again.

In these situations you simply can't be too careful.

Think he might be lucky to ever race again. Terrible accident. Being hit by the part was bad enough. Hitting the head again when hitting the barrier when the head was already damaged will have been even worse. Poor guy. I hope he comes back, but there must be a risk of long term damage/loss of abilities with such an incredible double impact.

Think it is a issue of the FIA not allowing testing ... (new) parts and (new) drivers are being tested at races ... which is insane.

Alonso and Kimi at Ferrari next year?

Legard saying Massa was out of the car when he clearly wasn't ...... does he use his eyes at all????

I have to agree that i would be very suprised if Massa was on the grid in 4 weeks time.

I hope he is but i would not be suprised if he was out for the season.

To be honest who cares as long as he gets better as F1 is not as important as someones life.

I doubt we'll see him back this year :(

Let's hope for a safe race today, we have and F1 Rookie on the grid. This weekend is taking on ominous echoes of that San Marino weekend.

The latest news is that the brain scans show nothing unusual, and that Felipe will be kept in an induced coma for a further 48 hours.

Sounds like my brain scan

Nothing <blush>

Joking apart i am so pleased but he must not be in a great way when being put under sedation for another 48 hours

I really hope Massa is back in the Ferrari at some point but i feel he will not be back this season if at all :s

I think keeping him in a coma is standard procedure for this sort of injury, it means that any brain swelling can be dealt with more quickly. Hopefully he will pull through, but I agree with Jim that it doesn't look good for Massa returning this season.

I really would not be suprised if this is Massa's career over.

I would rather that than his life tho but still terrible

I know - As a nurse, I've been very worried by the medical reports about him.... I know that they've been keeping him sedated in order to rest the brain and allow any swelling to resolve and it is encouraging that he's starting to respond to family and staff but it's never easy to tell with head injuries.....even apparently minor ones can have a devastating long-term effect on the person.

We can only hope and pray that he makes a full recovery :s
