It makes you wonder how come his teamate was allowed to drove around Magny Cours last year lap after lap with a dangling exhaust ....?

<no>

usually it's the black flag with an orange circle in the middle that tells a driver he needs to come in due to a problem with his car etc

in that particular case i guess the stewards decided it wasnt a danger although i'd offer a different opinion on that but nows not the time

Speedtv's reporting on Massa's condition is all over the place, they've changed their minds about 4 times in the last 30 minutes

BBC are reporting contradicting information.....I just hope it is media sensationalism (as despicable as it is to sensationalise over something like this).

I will not get much sleep tonight, I fear. :(

I talked to a friend of mine who is a doctor, but not a specialist. He said the injury is considered life threatening, but that the prognosis is based on the time between injury and the treatment administered. The life threatening aspect, in his opinion, is not a high probability due to the way the incident was handled.

The report that he is stable and had a "successful" surgery indicates to him that the treatment is on course to provide a successful conclusion.

However, he said that success is relative, and that the results vary from patient to patient. A young healthy fit guy like Massa has good odds. But, the demands of the sport may be an issue.

Let's remember Hakkinen's injury and his complete recovery, that is what we all hope for.

Assuming he pulls through surgery OK, could this be a career ending injury for him? Concussions are nasty things.

my estimate would be that he misses the the rest of the season

head injuries can't be rushed, especially in motorsport

True. I've seen many a career ending concussion to hockey players - although that is usually after several concussions over time, due to big body checks or being hit pucks, as opposed to being hit by an 800g bit of metal at 100+ mph.

any physicists among us who can estimate the weight the spring would have been at 100+mph?

played footie tonight and took a ball in the left eye, can barely see out of it right now, must have been in empathy.

i'm sure some of you have seen the close in picture of massa's head with helmet still on when he is being extracted from the car

the pupil on his open eye is severly dilated which is consistent with a serious head injury, he was also said to be badly agitated when he was conscious and had to be sedated, that is not a good sign

the reports are confusing

Yes mate you have very wise words there.

Sedated does point to a bad head injury as my Gf's mate was put into a sedated state after she had a terrible accident.

As for Massa waving that was a bad call from the BBC.

He was not waving his arm was not secure and he was in a distressed state as alot of people are after receiving a bad head injury.

I really hope Massa can recover from this but i know all too well that the next few days will be VERY imporant

James Allen is much more optimistic about the short term, but pragmatic about the long term. I get the feeling Massa's season is over.

He'll probably have no memory of what happened either if he sustained frontal lobe bruising. It's a classic symptom of a head on accident. Under braking the frontal lobe bags against the skull causing bruising and short term memory loss.

You have to feel for him. If anything he's one of the most genuine guys in the competition.

There is no way you can anticipate this kind of thing happening. Such a freak incident.

I have to confess the FIRST time I saw the video I saw the debris, but initially thought it went UNDER the car. Second time round I realized his hands were inactive. It was really eerie realizing he was unconscious at that speed.

Good point, and I paraphrase Stevie Smith the poetess 'not waving, drowning'.

Yes mate a totally freaky accident

Two in a week is pretty scary.

I really am worried about Massa tho.

I lost a good friend after a bad car accident.

She too was put into a sedated state straight after the accident to let the body and the brain relax.

I know i should not be saying this but his reactions and now the sedated state just brings home how serious this is for him.

I really hope Massa recovers as i will not be sleeping very well tonight as you do come to know these drivers very well being a fan of F1

What gets me the most is how a spring can hit another driver some 4 seconds after coming off another car.

I just find the unbelievable.

Do we need to look at enclosed cockpits or is this just two very serious and freaky accidents??

I think you make a very good point. This is two accidents too many for a death and a seriously injured drivers in a matter of a week or so. Something need to be done.

I know it can happened from other cars, but in this case is the FIA going to check the Brawn cars to ensure this is not going to happened again?

I really worry for Massa. I really hope he can race again very soon.

I'm confused. Ferrari and F1 are saying that Phil's surgery was 'positive' and that he's 'stable', in intensive care etc... yet other sources have him clinging on to the mortal coil. Why can't they just report straight facts rather than hypothesise?

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/motor-r...ow-1761435.html

The medical director of the hospital Peter Bazso is the source
Quote:

After receiving attention in the circuit's medical centre, where he spoke with doctors and his younger brother Eduardo, he was airlifted to the AEK Hospital in Budapest with concussion and a skull fracture which necessitated remedial surgery.

At eight o'clock last night a report claimed that medical director Peter Bazso told a news conference: "Massa's condition is serious, life-threatening but stable." It also said that Bazso and chief surgeon Lajos Zsiros expected him to be awoken from sedation today. A Ferrari spokesman vehemently denied the report and said Massa was stable and not in danger.

I can either guess Ferrari have their own medical consultant working with the hospital as it would not make sense to contradict the Medical Director. Either way I am more pleased he has survived the night and the first 24 hours are the most precarious of all.

Get well soon Felipe.
