The next 24hours are going to be vital for Massa. I really hope he pulls through as this is just tragic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhXX98aEV98 Thank God he was looking in his right side mirror just before it hit as if he had not it would have been his visor. My prayers are with Massa and his family |

Presumably he's suffering from a brain swelling or something like that? I just do not understand how he can go from being awake and talking, have an op, then be life threatened.... This is ominously like that Richardson woman who seemed fine after her skiing accident...

Oh no, I thought he was out of the woods. His poor family must be going through hell. |

I'm confused. Ferrari and F1 are saying that Phil's surgery was 'positive' and that he's 'stable', in intensive care etc... yet other sources have him clinging on to the mortal coil. Why can't they just report straight facts rather than hypothesise? |

James Allen says to "ignore" the reports from Sky/AP about Massa's condition, apparently his surgery went well and he is stable. Rubens Barrichello reports on Twitter that Massa's surgery went "very well," and that now "he is asleep waiting for a new scan tomorrow." |

i'm sure some of you have seen the close in picture of massa's head with helmet still on when he is being extracted from the car the pupil on his open eye is severly dilated which is consistent with a serious head injury, he was also said to be badly agitated when he was conscious and had to be sedated, that is not a good sign the reports are confusing |

I think part of the issue is vying for your headline to be noticed. What's more attention grabbing, 'serious but stable' or 'life-threatened'....? Most sources seem to suggest he's in a bad way, but in a good way, if that makes sense. However, some would appear to be reading the last rites to get more hits on their websites. I just hope it's not one of those injuries that gets progressively worse. I guess we'll get further news in the morning. It appears that they've put him under for the night to help his recovery, but plan to wake him up in the morning. |

It's possible that the "life-threatening" comment comes from an error in translation. As far as I can see it comes from a source at the hospital, who referred to Massa's condition as "life-threatening but stable," which isn't something we'd usually say in English. My best guess is that a better approximation would be "serious but stable," but not having seen the original quote (nor being able to speak Hungarian) I can't be sure. |

Just about everywhere but Sky seems to be using 'serious but stable'. Life-threatening but stable is a perfectly logical status to use, it simply means that the condition if life threatening but is neither getting worse not better. Applying interpetation to what everyone else is reporting, I would suggest that the situation is not as grave as the more extreme reports have suggested. Hopefully. |

According to Autosprout, the spring from Rubens' car weighs 'about 800g'.

Assuming he pulls through surgery OK, could this be a career ending injury for him? Concussions are nasty things. |

True. I've seen many a career ending concussion to hockey players - although that is usually after several concussions over time, due to big body checks or being hit pucks, as opposed to being hit by an 800g bit of metal at 100+ mph. |
