What was really worrying was the way the marshalls all stood about for about half an hour wondering what to do. There was no movement from Massa's head, and when they got that sheet out I was wondering if we were looking at the worst possible outcome.

It seems that Felipe has suffered bone damage to his skull and a concussion, and requires surgery to correct the damage. He will not race tomorrow.

If there wasn't such a long gap to the next race he might have missed a couple more races, but he's got four weeks to recover so may be back for Valencia. It's too early to say.

Is he being replaced by Ferrari's reserve driver (whoever he may be), or will they only race with one guy tomorrow?

Sporting regulation 19.1, section A:

Quote:

During a season each team will be permitted to use four drivers. Changes may be made at any time before the start of the qualifying practice session provided any change proposed after 16.00 on the day of scrutineering receives the consent of the stewards.

Additional changes for reasons of force majeure will be considered separately.

So I would imagine that only Kimi will start for Ferrari tomorrow.

I can not believe this happened again in a week.

Massa on Monday gave his sympathies to the Surtees family.

Massa was very very lucky not have been killed.

If he had been hit on the visor he would not have made it

I really hope Massa can be fit for the next GP in 4 weeks.

Motorsport has had 2 very wierd accidents but i hope there is not a third as there is normally always three

I'm just glad he's safe in hospital. When he didn't move for a while I was seriously concerned for his very life.

We'll have to wait and see what sort of long-term effect this has - I really hope he makes a full recovery and is back racing again soon.

On a lighter note and completely apart from the accident, it'd be great if Badoer can get a shot in a race if Felipe is out for a while. He deserves it for all his loyalty to Ferrari, though I imagine he would be quite some way off Kimi's pace.

Might be able to score some points too - he's currently the record holder for "Most starts without a point" at 49. But let's hope that Felipe is well enough to race in Valencia.

Massa suffers skull damage, concussion

By Pablo Elizalde  Saturday, July 25th 2009, 15:55 GMT

Felipe Massa will need to undergo surgery after it emerged he has suffered bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion in his accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Brazilian will be forced to miss the race after he was hit in the head by debris believed to belong to Rubens Barrichello's car.

Massa was airlifted to a Budapest hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Ferrari said in a statement that Massa will need to undergo surgery and will have to stay under observation in intensive care for an undisclosed period of time.

"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest," the statement said. "Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.

"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."

The team said further information will be released later tonight.

That does not sound good at all. What type of surgery are they talking about? If it was cosmetic he would not be in intensive care. I must admit i am getting worried for the guy
