John Iley, the chief of aerodynamics at Ferrari, has left the team according to reports in the Italian media on Wednesday. After a first half to a season which has yielded no wins for the reigning Constructors' World Champions, caught out by this season's regulation changes, the Englishman leaves during his sixth season with the team.

It is reported that, after a distinct lack of success with this year's F60 car, Ferrari elected not to assign Iley to the task of developing what is hoped to be a championship-challenging 2010 contender. The aerodynamicist, meantime, will be replaced by Greek Nicholas Tombazis.

well, the boss tends to be (or should be) the one who falls on his sword.....

but given that the Ferrari hasn't been the best car in the field for some time, it's probably a good move.

Funny thing about being an F1 aerodynamicist, one of the few jobs where you can be the 4th best in the world at what you do, and still get fired. :s

Harsh. McLaren, Renault and BMW also got caught out by the rule changes this year, so if he has been sacked for purely performance reasons then it is a bad call in my view.

Remember the start of 2008 when Massa binned it the first two races, and didn't look like even challenging for the title? Yet look where he is now. A bad couple of races/cars doesn't mean that that inividual isn't worth keeping on.

I guess your all assuming he is doing a great job and got unfairly sacked?

Employees leave companies for many reasons, it could be after 6 years in a highly intensive job he needs a break to recharge his batteries whether he knew it or not.

Ferrari cannot afford to carry any employees.

It didn't do Brawn any harm to have a sabbatical <think>

Unfairly is a bit strong, we see the results, Ferrari have had their ass handed to them by Brawn and Red Bull. Ferrari are not getting the results, and F1 is the ultimate results driven business, but from a empathetic stance it must be a little upsetting to be one of the best in the world at what you do and still get sacked.

reminds me of Spanish and Italian top league football teams who sack their manager after 8 games into the season.

My point is that you are all assuming its a knee jerk reaction, even comparing it to Spanish football.

If Ferrari were in the habit of sacking staff the moment they have a bad few races, who was shown the door half way through 2005 or 2006?

As i said, employees leave jobs for many reasons, this thread seems to want to blame the reason as being a knee jerk, brutal sacking, for a few poor results only. I doubt that's the case.

Even Dave Ryan might with me on this one.

From the tone of the second paragraph - it looks like he left of his own accord because he wasn't assigned the job of aerodynamics on next years car.

Now it may have been a "punishment" for the lack of performance of this year's car, but that doesn't mean he was sacked by Ferrari - merely that he left - possibly because he was annoyed at being passed over.

Steelstallions, in my defence, I did say 'if he has been sacked for purely performance reasons it is a bad call in my view'.

If it is his decision to leave or mutually agreed then obviously it is not so harsh.
