Arf!  Classic thread hi-jack!

Yeah, I thought that spygate was put to bed 18 months ago.

<doh>

I guess some people have trouble letting things go.

Sorry, I'm just getting info for the next Oliver Stone movie, and technically it's not a thread hi-jack as we were discussing the validity of Kimi's title and how he managed it considering his apathy these days.

With Monza traditionally a venue for Ferrari announcements, the Renault driver frequently linked with the team and the Italian Grand Prix coming up in just over seven weeks' time, can Fernando shed any light on where he will be racing next year? "What matters most to me is the World Championship and in 2009 I know that is impossible, so I'm already thinking of 2010," he explained. "What is not said is what colour will be in question, whether blue or red - we will have to wait and see…"

He's Ferrari bound <yahoo> <clap> *

Additionally what would have happened if Massa blew up in Brazil? Would Alonso have to have had a sudden issue from a car that had 0 mechanical failures all year?

Well, MS effectively lost his eighth title when he suffered the first race engine failure in his car for something approaching five years..... Maybe that was a setup too?

Hmmmm, scenario.

Athlete wins Gold medal. Performance enhancing drugs are later found in said athletes blood stream and it's certain that gold was achieved with the drug.

Athlete denies all knowledge, says coach gave them a painkiller or something similar one day.

A: So if the athlete IS telling the truth and DIDN'T know . . . which is quite possible/likely SHOULD they still keep his gold medal?

B: If a racing driver achieves results in a car that was for all intents stolen, SHOULD they still keep their spoils to date?

It's the same moral issue IMO.

The answer to A is always the same NO, regardless if the athlete is innocent or not because it's more than likely the drug gave them an unfair performance enhancement.

This has always been my issue with spygate which is why I have my conspiracy theory fairy story. It's simply unfair on all the other athletes that these two retained an unfairly gained advantage regardless of whether they knew or not.

As it is it's a well known fact that not only did Alonso know, but took an active part in data exchange. And that he was still allowed to compete makes no sense.

What happens to other athletes? They recieve bans that can destroy their careers in similar situations because they ain't getting any younger. However the commercial side of F1 wouldn't have been able to handle a year ban for one who is considered to be the best in the world.
