Really, I'm the exact opposite. Being at the track is such a raw experience. You get the sounds the smell, the wind. I'd still be driving the 8 hours to Indy if there was a GP there. |

I'm with you Rob. I have been to GP's in the UK, France, Italy, Monaco, Canada, and the US. I've also been to the Indy 500, the 24 hours of Le Mans, Goodwood FoS, Datytona, Laguna Seca, Talledega, Portland, Watkins Glen, Texas Speedway, Sebring, and an untold number of local and regional events. You must go to understand the real raw power and spectacle of the event. I always have scanners and track radio so I know what's going on. Beyond the event, people, the smells, the track food, the cocktail parties, the weather, the noise, the other fans, the traffic,.... everything informs my viewing on the tele. I am 53 years old and didn't start all this travel until the halcion financial days of the early ninties when my personal finances reached critical mass. Still, I flew to Florida for the IRL race at St. Petes and I received my tickets for the Moto GP in Laguna Seca, Cali, today in the mail. I have arrangements to meet family and friends at the track and in bars and restaurants. I will see people I only see trackside. The talk will be the most concentrated motorsports convos I will ever have. Yes, I probably know more about the race details in front of the tele, but one can never exchange the feeling of seeing D. Hill pass from 7th to 6th (and into the points) in front of you at Luffields in an Arrows in 1998 (after Walkinshaw told him famously in the press to pull his socks up and to quit his whininging). Not a tele worthy pass, but the fans went nuts and so did I. Priceless! I only share this to say that I have been fortunate, but as my retirement years approach I will be less likely to be able to afford this travel, either due to finances or health. I will then rely on the memories, the pics, and the conversations between old dogs like me. |

I've been extremely lucky, in that I attended the SAGP from 1971-1974, and then from 1981-1985 (the break was due to being at boarding school). I also attended the 1992 GP, but the new Kyalami circuit doesn't provide the kind of viewing, racing, and value for money that the old circuit did, and I decided to watch the 1993 race on TV. The thrill of going to the track is in the noise, the smell and the sense of speed. If you really want to follow a race, however, the best seat in the house is in front of your own television. If you can get to a testing day then that's probably the best way to get the motor racing experience. You can then move around the circuit and see exactly what the different drivers and cars are doing. I'm not that fond of large crowds, and hate being in a single fixed position particularly if all you see is one corner. |

I have only attended 3 British GP in all my years following the sport... idea was to go every two yeas and spread the cost, gut growing family stopped that... However I do think that this year the atmosphere will be electric given it will have a defending British Champion, a new British Champion elect and could be the last GP in the UK for a while... and possibly the last with Ferrari in attendance so all things considered this year could be special... |

I am fortunate enough to have been quite a few times as a guest of McLaren's. I went in 2000, 2001 then 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Not been able to go the last couple of years due to work commitments. |
