Sports day was easily the best day of the school year

No it wasn't.

It was great. No lessons, no sitting in classrooms. Outside in the sunshine playing sports and having sporting competition

(and a classic chance to show off to the ladies) fantastic

Being forced to take part in athletic events which you are no good at, and forced to do it in front of the entire school, such that when you come in dead last, as expected, the entire school population of 700+ students are all there laughing at you, which makes you feel worse and more upset than you normally feel as you're one of the more unpopular/uncool kids, with little support from the teachers to get you through this incredibly difficult, school endorsed embarrassment.

Yes - fun days indeed. <sarcasm>

But people like me had to put up with being intellectually inferior every other school day of the year. Apart from Electronics I never really excelled at anything although my grades were all decent, but there was no girls in the Electronics group so Sports day and PE was the only chance we had to beat the smart kids…

Other end of the spectrum perhaps?

Ah, but I bet you were never made to answer maths questions in front of the entire school, knowing if you got it wrong, everybody would laugh at you and take the piss and make you feel like shit.

You could have always refused to compete? That was an option at my school although if you did not compete you had to bring drinks etc out to all the parents

<roflmao>

Nope - at my school, performance was compulsory, though you could elect to do one of the field events, which were done in the morning, before the main spectator events on the track in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, this didn't work out for me usually for one of two reasons. Either all the field events were taken by the time I made it to the sign up sheet (because the others in my class who were no good at sports got there before I did), or more usually, the sports captain for my house was a sadistic little git who didn't like me and wanted to embarrass me in front of the whole school.

Sounds like you went to a very different school to me

We didn’t have the house system, just our own form groups but we rarely had form to form competition, it was either individual competition or team sports were competed as a school against other schools. And we were still a school, the amount of schools I see now that call themselves a “Technical College” is just madness. As a school, we nearly always lost at everything but as was such the case at west leeds high, it wasn’t the actual result that was important!

Ah, sports day. Did you see that school in the paper this week that banned parents from attending their kid's sports day this year for 'safety grouds'? Apparently they were worried about the possibility of kiddie-fiddlers turning up!!!

They should have banned then on the grounds that a LOT of parrents of the kids playing sports can be total assholes.
