Hadn't realised Mclaren had closed the gap that much

A lot of it is down to Kovalainen's recent improved form, as well as the unreliability Ferrari have suffered in the last two races.

Even if it is dry it is supposed to be fairly cool this weekend, so that will hurt Kimi, and probably help Lewis.

Anyone know off the top of their head what tires are on for this weekend?

Wheels.

If it is wet, McLaren will have a big advantage. The Ferraris suffer in the rain.

Not necessarily. If they can get the setup right, they'll be really quick. If they get it slightly wrong, Kimi will sulk and go really slowly <grrr> , and Massa will take up ballet.... <doh>

And there is also the question of strategy. Ferrari got it badly wrong at Silverstone with Kimi, choosing not to change his tyres at the first pit stop.

Well, that's true, but a certain two-time WDC also elected the same choice, so there must have been some sensible thinking behind it somewhere, even if it did turn out to be a total horlicks! The only people who really made any sensible tyre choice were Honda and Barrichello, who sensbily elected to put on full wet tyres, which paid off with a podium starting from a lap down when he changed!

I think the decision was made based on how the teams thought the conditions would change. Ferrari and Renault expected it to stop raining and the track to start drying, in which case leaving the same tyres on would provide an advantage as they wore down to "slicks" at the same time as the track dried out. McLaren, on the other hand, expected the rain to continue, hence changing the tyres.

You're right about Barrichello, though - changing to wets was the inspired move of the day, when other teams saw how he was carving his way through the field, I'm amazed more people didn't change to full wets.

Rubens had nothing to lose if it stopped raining. It would have been total disaster for one of the front runners to gamble on full wets like that.

For three or fours laps, it looked like a disaster was looming for anyone not on full wets, or does the fact that Lewis and co were barely able to keep the car in a straight line while Rubens was over *30 secs* a lap faster not constitute an issue? Think about it. Just ONE lap at that speed cancels out the pitstop to change to better tyres, and another cancels the subsequent change when the weather improves!

Pretty weird that both WDC's chose to stay on slicks. I presume also that Rubens stopped after they did (can't remember).

I bet Massa wished he'd put the Full Wets on ;)
