Spa F1 layout to be shortened

Spa-Francorchamps, the much loved but longest layout on the formula one calendar, may have to be shortened for future editions of the historic Belgian grand prix. It is being reported in Belgium, including by f1-club.be, that a portion of the 7km circuit is proposed to be cut out.

The famous Eau Rouge section is safe, but the proposal for the new shortened circuit in the Ardennes is to connect the current Pouhon left-hand sweepers with Blanchimont.

Left out of the new layout, therefore, is the high speed Fagnes chicane and Stavelot, and the existing Pouhon and Blanchimont are likely to be altered.

The report said the modifications could take place prior to next year's Belgian grand prix, or in time for the 2010 race.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton said last week that the disappearance of many of the more challenging 'driver tracks' is a shame.

"You really feel the history of those places whenever you race there; they have real character," the McLaren driver said.

"Each time they are refurbished, they lose a little more of their individuality - but they are made safer, so we can continue to race on them - so that's a good compromise."

This is insane. They ruined Hockenheim by turning it into a car park. F1 is in danger of making itself so pink and fluffy that it will become impossibly boring for the fans.

Well, they haven't ruined a classic track for a while. Wonder what they'll do when they've ruined them all <think>

Apparently, at Monaco they are planing on building an elevated oval which will have a speed limit of 20 mph and be surrounded by pillows and cushions.

What next? Cut a lump of off Monza? Look at the bloody awful state of Hockenheim these days, it looks like it was scrawled out by a two year old! If they destroy Spa in the same way then they'll lose most of the fanbase!

Yeah he really ruined Hockenheim... he turned a mind numbingly dull 3 straights and 3 chicanes into a circuit that can actually produce decent races without rain.

Take off the rose tinted specs guys.

Even James Hunt who was a real racer said the old Hockenheim was an awful track.

And besides, this report is bullshit.

An official for the Spa Francorchamps circuit on Monday played down reports that the much loved Formula One layout may be shortened from its current 7km.

Local reports in Belgium say historic Spa, the longest layout on the current F1 calendar, had - with Bernie Ecclestone's approval - proposed to connect the Pouhon corners with Blanchimont, thereby cutting out famous sections including the Fagnes chicane and Stavelot.

But circuit spokesman Luc Willems told the Dutch language f1today.nl: "Spa has always been an unique circuit and that is not going to change."

He said there is a difference between proposals and reality.

"Our circuit is as it is and is not going to change," Willems insisted.

The 1992 situation was artifically created by Patrese making an extra stop. Could you produce anything like that from 1993 onwards, excluding the wet race?

So, what was so wonderful about Valencia then? Where there was almost no overtaking?

Who said anything about Valencia? What's that got to with Tilke "ruining" circuits... it didn't even exist before Tilke. What about Silverstone in the dry, Monza, Catalunya, even Suzuka... all tracks that produce terrible racing but Tilke hasn't touched.

Well it started years ago when F1 returned to Kyalami in 92 to what was a soulless refurb of what was once a classic circuit. Then again, you could argue that it really started with the new 'ring, though the nordschleilfe was hopelessly dangerous.

I really don't think they should alter Spa. I just think it is the FIA and FOM tinkering and may be taking kick backs from Tilke.
