I think Alonso was very correct to ask for a minute silence and i was amazed that there was not one for the men, woman and children who lost their lives in last weeks plane crash.

I can NOT understand why this was not put in place as i am sure if this had happened in the UK we would be pretty upset about this <no>

I agree.

Also there should have been 2 mins, the other for Alonso's race.

I understood there was 1 minute silence on friday. But I was suprised that it wasn't done on race day when it would have been more high profile.

What happened after 9/11, did they do 1 minute silence for that? All I can recall is the Ferrari racing without logos.

Spain has had three days of official mourning, during which the minutes silence was held.
They probably thought a minutes silence after this period was not needed on their maiden race at Valencia.
After all was it not Spanish race organisers who decided not to?

They had a minute's silence for the Pope, for goodness' sake! It was extremely disappointing and a little surprising that the race organisers could not find time on race day to pay tribute to those who died in the air crash. Apparently Alonso had a lot of support from his fellow drivers on the issue, so it is a mystery why no minute's silence was held.

I guess three entire days of national mourning aren't enough then.....?

How many days of national mourning to dedicate to the tragedy is the business of the Spanish government. F1 is an international sport and thus not bound by what the local government says or does. It would have been a fitting tribute to those who died for the F1 fraternity to have held a minute's silence on race day - and apparently the drivers agreed, although the race organisers did not.

There would have been no question of a silence had the GP been in another country... as it happened, the GP circus was in Spain so the gesture on Friday was appropriate... not to do it on race day was not to lessen that sentiment in any way.

I also recall Trulli paying tribute to him with the words 'Thank you Pope' on his helmet. <cool>

For what it's worth, a minute's silence would have been fitting in my view, but maybe the organisers felt that after three days of mourning the fans were ready to move on and had come to enjoy themselves.

Well, Trulli is Catholic, and had his marriage blessed by Pope JP, so he had something to thank him for. Ferrari also ran black nose cones that same race, I recall.

Well, I agree that it was good of Alonso to propose the minutes silence, but I guess the race organisers had their reasons for turning him down. May be sentiment is seen differently in Spain. I know that if it was in the UK we would probably have had one, though we seem to have a minutes silence for almost anything. May be us brits are just a sentimental old bunch.
