Alonso signs for Ferrari - probably

The word in the F1 paddock in Monte Carlo is that Fernando Alonso has just inked a deal to drive for Ferrari in 2010.

No confirmation is expected for a year, and there may be denials of any arrangement, as there would obviously be some serious knock-on effects for other parties in the F1 paddock.

Alonso went to Renault this year after splitting with McLaren unexpectedly at the end of last season. It was a stop-gap solution for the Spaniard, although it was dressed up as the big return to the team with which he won his two World Championships. This year the team's performance has been rather disappointing and Fernando has scored just nine points, while Nelson Piquet has failed to score and the team is languishing in seventh place in the Constructors' Championship. Unless there is a dramatic improvement soon the team will have no hope of finishing the year better than fourth in the championship and there have been rumours for some time that ING may be looking around at other opportunities.

Fernando has made no secret of the fact that he will consider other offers if they are sensible. He has been angling for a ride at Ferrari for some time. It may seem that is a rather premature move, but these days in F1 deals are being done much earlier than used to be the case. Kimi Raikkonen's deal with Ferrari, which began in 2007, was first reported as being done as early as October 2005. Alonso's 2007 deal with McLaren was announced in December 2005. Thus now would be the time that deals are being done for 2010.

Not surprising, the best driver in the paddock and the best team in the paddock is hardly a combination to avoid. Plus Raikkonen's Ferrari deal expires at the end of 2009, and in my opinion he's unlikely to renew it as his long-term commitment to F1 has always been questionable.

I don't like him, but if Kimi is not going to be around in 2010, then if its not Alonso who is it.

I feel ill

Will you still not like him if he wins 5+ WDCs and WCCs for the team? I think Alonso will fit in well at Ferrari and, although he might not achieve quite as much as that, he will certainly perform well for the team.

If Massa remains at Ferrari beyond '09. I hope he does, but it's not certain to say the least. Ferrari might want some continuity if Kimi goes, though.

I would like Bernie if he drove for Ferrari and won that many trophy's ;)

But its his politics and attitude that i am not so keen on. Sure if Ferrari are still the team to beat when/if he joins and Massa cannot keep up with him i am sure he will be as happy as a pig in....... and sing the praises of the team.

I was beginning to wonder how he had managed to keep so quiet this season, i reckon this story may be the reason he is not tearing the Renault team a new one.

Renault have been a massive disappointment this season, do they deserve to keep Alonso? I'd say no.

... The way Heidfeld's season has been going I wouldn't be surprised to see Alonso in the BMW for 2009 <doh>

I would think the anti-Ferrari would be delighted w/ Alonso going to Ferrari. After all if Ferrari don't make Alonso happy of his teammate is faster, Alonso will air Ferrari's dirty laundry (if there was any).

Well I'm hardly pro-Ferrari, so Alonso going there would present all sorts of divided loyalties for me! I guess it would most likely guarantee him another title or two, which might make it worth having to see him in red overalls.

I had to divide my loyalties too, when Kimi left McLaren for Ferrari. It made it even tricker last year with me not really being a big Lewis fan, Alonso being voted "toddler of the year (tantrums included)", and Spygate dominating most discussions. At least this year I can cheer on my 2 Finns. <dance> Go Kimi!, Go Heikki! <dance>

I've never really supported any team, at least not since Minardi left. It's quite difficult to form an emotional attachment to a team in the same way you can with a driver, in my opinion.
