Having won the rights to broadcast Formula 1 from 2009, the BBC has revealed it is to keep production of its grand prix coverage ‘in-house', with two names emerging as key players for the major presenting roles.

Radio Five Live commentator David Croft is believed to have been earmarked for the lead commentating spot, according to Pitpass, with BBC stalwart Adrian Chiles set to take over Steve Rider's current position as the main presenter.

Rumours persist that BBC's hugely popular Top Gear team – comprising Jeremy Clarkson, Richard ‘Hamster' Hammond and James May, as well as the infamous Stig – will play some kind of part in the shows, but there appears to be little room for any of ITV-F1's current line-up of Rider, Martin Brundle, James Allen, Mark Blundell, Louise Goodman and Ted Kravitz et al.

A new era then? <think>

Based on the ITV4 GP2 coverage. David Croft is shit!

BBC need to keep Brundle or leave the coverage on ITV.

Agreed, without Brundle they might as well forget any hopes of maintaining the ratings....

Adrian Chiles?- what a load of rubbish

He is the worse presenter I have seen in my life. He can't read autocues, has no personality and would just moan the whole time about how West Brom have just been beaten 5-0 by <<insert any premiership team here>>.

David Croft's commentary is ok on ITV4 but I prefer his commentary on Five Live, they seem like different people strangely enough. The demands on commentating on radio and TV are very different I guess.

No room for my preferred team of Ben Edwards and John Watson either, but I always suspected that was a long long shot.

Have to confess that I always thought Ben Edwards and Jeremy Shaw made a good team in the good old pre-split IndyCar days....

Chiles is okay with the Apprentice and MOTD2, but I agree he would be totally unsuitable for F1.

Brundle's not as good as he once was, the same old stories being told again and again although I would still keep him.

I still think Richard Hammond is the favourite to be the presenter.

RIGHT...

Having any of the top gear team involved would ruin any credibilty or kudos the bbc have winning these rights. Hammond has gone on record several times in saying he never watches it, and only seemed interested when he got the chance to drive an R25, something thousands of far more deserving fans will never get the chance to do.

Croft- Absoloutley agree his gp2 coverage is about the worst performance i've heard.

Chiles? Stick to football mate, its far more dignified and something you would have half a chance of knowing anything about. Theres always something flipant about how he presents tv shows since he left Working Lunch, that i believe will stop him ever presenting main stream sport. Other than fluffy shows like the one show, he isnt main stream material.

Ben Edwards? Hasnt he been dumped by BTCC on ITV4? or was that geordie guy from radio le mans only doing one round?

Heres an idea, Drag Charlie Cox back to four wheels where he belongs, bring in John Watson from A1GP (They worked together on BTCC at end of ninties superbley) and get the whole thing presented by....

(have sat for 5 minutes)

OK i dont know who presenter should be, but i read on this board i believe that DC would move into Mark Blundell role, which would work really well

Yeah, Blundell's role is set to be filled by DC, according to what I have heard (from a pretty reliable source). As for the rest of the team, all I have to say is anyone but Jeremy Clarkson. Or James Allen, obviously.

From what I've heard DC hasn't signed anything for definite yet, although I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens

I would imagine that DC is probably holding out should another race seat come up for 2009, Vettel and Webber are tipped to race for Red Bull next year but it's by no means certain that this will be DC's last season. On balance, though, I think punditry is the more likely destination for him.

Haven't the BBC offered an option to listen to 5live commentary when watching football via interactive? Maybe they'll do the same with F1 <think>

Martin Brundle was on Radio 2 the other week talking about his future. He said nothing had been discussed yet but would like to stay in the media side of Formula One. I think if he could remove himself from the Hamilton Hysteria then he should definitely be involved with the BBC. As for the main commentary person I have no idea although this Ben Edwards chap seems quite good <thumbsup>

I don't think MB has "Hamilton Hysteria", that is James Allen. I find Brundle even handed and fair.
