Link to article... Homologation issues will mean Priaulx will be waiting a while for his dev racer... The season as far as BMW are concerned could be all over by the Oschersleben or even the Brands Hatch round. |

Clearly the WTCC regs mean that diesel engines are the way to go, but if BMW were to produce a diesel engine and then start dominating again, what's to stop the FIA from tinkering with the rules again to give the other teams a fighting chance? |

Nothing... but BMW (or Mario Thiessen) is not keen on racing a Diesel... added to the fact that at present there is no 320d Si in production so in order to get such a car into production and Homologated effectively writes off a BMW WTCC diesel racer this season. |

No, I've heard that Thiessen is opposed to racing diesels, which begs the question - how long will BMW stay in WTCC? |

That is what I said...
Well BMW presented their racing version of the new BMW M3 at the Chicago Auto Show back in February. This new 485 bhp V8 engined race car has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) from 2009 onwards... ... maybe 2008 will be the last WTCC season for BMW

If you believe the Rumors... DTM will be introducing changes to their rules for 2009 that we see a complete silhouette car with common parts except for the engine that already has pretty good existing regulations. If this is true, then DTM could well take off big time and effectively kill support for WTCC in Europe... another reason BMW may well be looking outside WTCC for next year |

..and you might see the Japanese teams bring their GT500 spec cars into it and wipe the floor with everyone.... |

These rules changes might be designed to snare Citroen who are sniffing around the DTM. They've more or less said that if the WRC doesn't start getting better promotion they're off. |

As I understand it for the DTM to change to these new rules, a new manufacturer is required. Besides current participants Audi & Mercedes other manufacturers like Citroën/Peugeot and Toyota (even BMW) have been discussing the new rules with ITR, the promoter of DTM. The new rules will include a common carbon fiber base for all manufacturers, changed aerodynamic rules with less downforce and fewer small wings, cheaper parts... I've even heard that hybrid engine technology is likely to follow... But these new rules may not see the light of day before 2010. |
