Vettel on pole (even with just a couple of laps of fuel) would get a lot of publicity for the team and keep Vettel out of the first lap trip ups.

That would be a rather silly thing to do. After his pitstop Vettel would go to the back of field, ruining his race, and any good publicity they got for pole would be negated by the fact everyone would know it was on fumes.

Don't think I'd agree with that .... there's no such thing as bad publicity and the sponsors would love a day in the sunshine with the Sunday morning newspapers lauding a new pole sitter.

We've had rogue pole sitters because of rain ... the car and driver always get the publicity even if it is a false situation.

Doesn't matter if he then slipped back through the field ... he'd at least keep out of the first lap traumas and might even benefit from a safety car period.

Ah, but let's say they're on pole on fumes. There's probably 50/50 odds of a safety car within the first few laps, which would allow them to change to the hard tyre compound and fill the car brimful with fuel. Most people will be two-stopping I would guess, so they could possibly stay out until well after half way, gaining the pitstop back, and be right back in the hunt.

Or not....

Just a thought.

The driver who fills up first to the end of the race should win if there's a safety car.

Could work, it's risky though. Something I'd expect from one of the 2nd tier teams.

Just a thought.

What ban? I thought the only 'ban' was that the cars aren't allowed to pit until the field is lined up and the pits are opened? At which point the car on fumes can be filled to the brim. OK, they're then probably last, but everyone else will need to pit, giving back numerous positions....

Not if the cars in front have sufficent speed, as the cars at the back of the queue suffer from "field spread".

I believe Schumacher would have won in 2004 by staying out in the safety car period.

I like. Would make things interesting. I'd love to see one of the lower teams try something like that.
