Qualifying can important, just not as important as races. I can't understand why you would judge a driver's ability in a session which ultimately doesn't directly count for anything. It's like judging a 100m runner in a quarter final or semi final rather than final.

Because it is more difficult to judge absolute performance in the races, as more incidents happen meaning that drivers are less likely to show their full potential.

Well you have to use a combination of the two IMO. Qualifying might not count towards the world championship on its own (as you are fond of saying), but it certainly helps put together a good race.

Unless you're either Michael Schumacher or Kimi Raikkonnen in which case you can still get a podium finish from dead last.....

But neither could do it at Monaco, so clearly at some circuits qualifying is VERY important.

Schumacher never won from the back of the grid..

The lowest he ever started from and won was from 16th (out of 24 starters) at Spa in 1995... the next lowest start to win was from 7th at Indianapolis in 2003.. but 66 of his 91 wins where from the front row.

I love that Schumacher won more GP than he had poles but he still needed to start within the top 3 rows to achieve this amazing feat
