Should a member of the Royal family be paid £100,000 and given free watches when the country pays for them for everyday activities???

Personally i feel the money should go to charity of a fund to pay for themselves.

Last year Zara made alot of money being the face of Landrover but is this right???

Also she received a MBE in 2007 for her services to equestrianism.

She should be good as she does nothing else  <sarcasm>

I think it's ridiculous that a member of royalty can be given a New Year's honour, especially as grandma's estate basically pays for her to ride horses all the time. There's not really anything wrong with the sponsorship deal, assuming she gives the money to charity, of course, after all, she's well known, and that's what big names go for for advertising. Of course, it would be much better advertising if she was wearing just the watch....

<thumbsup>

Didn't think Grandma had any say in the honours list <think>

As far as I know, most honors are reserved for distribution by the cabinet to their favourite supporters and donors, upon which they block any investigation into coruption.

Oh yeah, also they dish out honors for PR as well, like to the england cricket team for winning the ashes once in 20 years.

And where do you think this government learned that from?

It's always been the same. Corruption is nothing new.

I never said it was new, I'm just pointing out the rather glaring conflict of interest in the honors system.

Well quite, but then who cares about the "honours" system other than the self-preening prats who get given them? As Billy Bragg so aptly sang .... "Member of the British Empire - that doesn't sound too good to me."

Some people obviously do, otherwise the cash for honors scandal would never have erupted. Also, doesn't it get some of the donors a place in the House of Lords, which certainly is a position of power.

Personally I would scrap the house of Lords and have a fully voted in upper house which would be elected off set from general elections by, say, 2 years, to ensure that there is an adequate balance of power and to keep the government on their toes.

I was talking more about the New Year's Honours list and so on (MBEs, CBEs, knighthoods etc) rather than peerages, which are awarded slightly differently.

I think an elected upper house would work quite well. We could have one house elected by the current first-past-the-post system and the other elected by proportional representation, to have a balance between the number of votes reflecting the number of representatives, and proper representation of constituencies.
