I'm surprised we haven't been told about the massive stockpile of weapons of mass destruction and the immediate and very real direct treat to the UK...

It is only a pity that in order to get any legitimate backing for any military action the UN would need to pass a resolution on it.

Is this Bush's "legacy"? Last year we has Tony Blair and his "legacy". What a load of b*ll*cks. I wish these out going political leaders would just leave without kicking and screaming and regretting the disapointments of not having "make history". Not every Prime Minister or President can be a Winston Churchill or a George Washington and they should accept that. Or is Bush trying to cover the dodgy history he has made, including bringing civil war to the middle east (aidded and abetted by Tony Blair)?

Well, as a leader you have two options. You either make your mark on history, making the kind of tough, unpopular decisions that have you the subject of numerous Internet petitions calling for your resignation/impeachment, and having your face plastered all over history books/national currency/military recruitment propaganda/newspapers with a particular fascination with big, bold lettering for ever more, or you get on with the job and run the country effectively, safely and at a massive profit. With any luck, you'll at least be a historical footnote.*

Yeah, isn't the running joke in US intelligence that the yankees knew that Iran/Iraq had WMDs because they still had the receipts.

Why do they even care though? Why do they risk looking like pathetic publicity whores just to get their name in lights? It reeks of disappointment at a mediocre reign. Thatcher didn't need to chase her legacy (I know Thatcher wasn't universally liked, but at least she was a strong leader).

Just because she was hate by some sections of society, it didn't make her a bad leader. The main thatcher bashers were the highly unionised and inefficient industries that would have gone bust in the 1970 if it weren't for massive government subsidies.

Depends who you ask. In many people's eyes she was the original "legacy-chaser." Blair was simply upfront about the fact that he wanted to be remembered.

This is true.

What made her a bad leader was the fact that she was a bad leader.

Personal prejudices aside, you have to admit that she was a strong PM. Of course you will hate her if you are from a socialist background or support unions.

In the thatcher era, my dad turnedhis business from a 12 man operation into a £30M turnover company. You could do that in those days. Now the government sees anyone putting in hard work and thinks it is a reason to cripple them with stealth taxes (if you doubt me, how do you explain a levy of £1000pa being added to trades men's tax bills circa may 1997? Many of these people had small businesses and any added tax could drive them out of business). I don't say this because I'm tory (if the current tories were in they would probably do the same), I say this because the current attitude in government is that the public is a giant cash cow and they can do what they want with the huge pool of tax revenue they leach out of us every year, with very little accountability.
