There were tons of complaints like that when Edison developed the incandescent bulb but it's been used, with little to no changes, for more than 100 years.

There are a number of other options besides flurescent bulbs - LEDs to start with. But people are going to always complain about change - many of these people today would be decrying that "d*mn new circular thing that will make the dragging sleds go too fast and possibly hurt someone" of yesterday.
