Has anyone else been watching this news story? It's not a huge story, nor someone of great importance but I have been intrigued by the fact that this footballer was arrested with both his brother and a female "friend" after an altercation with another group at a MacDonalds. He was charged with Common Assault (maximum sentence 6 months) and his brother was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. (Maximum sentence 5 years) I believe the female was charged with common assault also. Both his brother and the female friend were released on bail, but the famous (ish) footballer is not released on bail but instead spends the whole of the new-year in jail and has to attend court again today. Where the same magistrates again refuse his bail application, remanding him in custody until the 16th January. This was promptly overturned by a proper judge and he's now been given bail. I am wondering, is this a case of one law for one and one law for another? Or a sinister case of JP's (normal people) letting their jealosy get in the way of the case? Incidentally, the charge for Joey was changed today to assault causing actual bodily harm, thus the same charge his younger brother faces, but his brother DID get bail first time round. I must admit I don't read stories of footballers, minor celebs or the like as I am simply not interested. I don't know the full story and I'm really not interested in it, but I do wonder if the magistrates' decision had something to do with the fact that Barton is a footballer and liable to be emulated by youngsters - hence the rather fierce custodial sentence. |
