I haven't read all the replies on this thread, but as an owner of a large dog (75 lb boxer) and a fairly new parent, incidents such as this are 100% the fault of the parents. My dog has been gentle and not in the least bit aggressive with my daughter. Even if she is sitting on the floor my dog will usually just sniff her and lie down next to her, or ignore her completely (we had the dog first). The same with a friend of mine who has a young daughter and a 115 lb American Bulldog, their daughter will try to ride their dog, and has a habit of pulling his tail and ears. He's never even hinted at being remotely annoyed. It's all in how you raise the dog. Both my friends and my wife and I have raised/trained our dogs to be submissive to humans. They are NOT the lords of the castle. In my house my wife and I are the alphas of the pack (we also have a small dog). The problem is chavs like these who want their dogs to be the Billy Bad Ass of the Block and raise their to be aggressive, and that behavior is rewarded. The problem is the dogs learn to be aggressive and it doesn't matter to whom the aggressive behavior is directed toward, the dog is just doing what it was raised to do. More that likely the dog wasn't trying to hurt or kill the kid, he was just establishing the pecking order in his pack, which is what dogs do when not controlled by an alpha.

I hate the this happened, but the parents should go to prison, they are to blame. .

If you're not responsible at 16, when are you?

18, or older. When you're allowed to buy cigarettes and alcohol. If I were ever unfortunate enough to have a kid or kids, there's no bloody way I'd let a 16 year old look after them, family or not!

I doubt that some 18 year olds are particularly responsible.

And equally, some kids can be considered responsible by the age of 16.

Some can be, but usually those 16 year olds responsible enough to take care of a young one will be responsible enough to take steps to avoid getting pregnant.

What difference does those 2 years make? I know a lot of people who have looked after young kids when aged 16 or younger.

So you are responsible if you buy fags aged 18??? Oh dear. I thought you only had to be 16 to do that anyway.

Not since October 1. The legal mimimum age for buying tobacco rose on that date from 16 to 18, as part of the compromise to stop the anti-smoking nannyfascist brigade from whining too much that smoking hasn't been completely banned in public places.

My son was in the army at 16 years old. He was a responsible kid.

When my daughter was alive, my next door neighbour's 16 year old used to babysit. She was a very responsible 16 year old, who later went on to join the RAF.

Regrettably, the 16 year old in this story doesn't appear to very responsible at all. And as Rob says, quite rightly, when you have dogs someone (usually the owner) has to be the alpha, otherwise you are really going to have problems with them.

Unless they're something like a Westie, Scottie or similar rat-on-a-string type dog that pensioners and homeless people have for claiming dependancy benefit. If these go off on one, you just need to tread on them to put them out of their misery. Of course, you do need waterproof shoes, there's nothing worse than stepping in a Poodle with sandals on.....
