It took them nearly 30 mins to get him out of the car and off to the medi centre

So, there was no rush to remove him then?

As I recall, Kelvin escaped that crash uninjured.

I believe he had a serious concussion. The reason for him remaining in the car was so the medics could stablize him.

OK, what I should have said was RELATIVELY uninjured i.e no broken bones or such.

He was knocked unconscious in the impact and the medics and rescue team therefore had no way of knowing whether he had any spinal injuries. After a shunt like that, with an unconscious driver, they would automatically assume the worst and extricate the driver as though he had spinal injuries. Actually 30 minutes is quite quick under the circumstances.

whitestar tells me that 30 minutes is good and 45 minutes would be the absolute maximum to extricate any driver.

Very sad.

Shouldn't they be looking at ways at increasing the side impact protection in touring/saloon cars.

There was a fatal accident at Bathurst last year that was not dissimilar and I remember former BTCC driver Keith O'dor was killed several years ago when he spun but his car slid back across the track and t-boned by another car.

it was actually Frank Biela of all people that t boned O'dor

Indeed it was. Regrettably, a lot of people actually blamed Biela for Kieth's death.

not sure how though

having seen the crash a few times I can't really see how Biela could have avoided it

Me neither. But there are folks who still blame Biela for it. :(

It's not the sight of the accident that remains with me. It was the sound. I was stood at Knickerbrook and the bang the crash made still sounded horrific.
