What an absolutely horrendous accident. You just don't expect a racing car in this day and age to break up like that. :(

A terrible accident indeed.

Here is what Grandprix.com has to say about the accident. It also explains why the car broke up the way it did.

My condolences to all the Sperafico family (some of whom I had met).

Horrible accident :(

Not sure why the article is critical of the circuit. The circuit itself isn't dangerous, something similar could happen on a number of tracks. Monza for instance. It's just bad luck if the car rebounds directly into the rest of the field.

Indeed. I hope that the track - in my opinion the finest on the F1 calendar - isn't ruined by the kind of knee-jerkery we so often see in the wake of a fatal accident.

could have happened anywhere, including Silverstone. Remind me never to drive a space frame car though.

Very sad.

Shouldn't they be looking at ways at increasing the side impact protection in touring/saloon cars.

There was a fatal accident at Bathurst last year that was not dissimilar and I remember former BTCC driver Keith O'dor was killed several years ago when he spun but his car slid back across the track and t-boned by another car.

Not sure you could build a car EVER to save someone in that type of accident.

Remember this is the fastest part of the circuit and the car that hit him was prob travelling at 120+ which on a side impact is prob too fast to prevent serious injury.

Just a very unlucky accident <no>

I think Keith O`dors was at the AVUS on the latest and shortest layout with that odd chicanes
I am almost sure because it lead to the disclosure of the AVUS too

What a terrible accident. The poor man had no chance.

TBF, tin top safety is just about as good as it ever has been. I remember Kelvin Burt having a horrific crash at Olton park in a T5 (it even looked bloody awful from where I was standing , on the outside of Knickerbrook). It pretty much took him out for the year, he was just lucky that the impact was on the passenger side.

Kelvin Burt at Oultan Park.

It took them nearly 30 mins to get him out of the car and off to the medi centre

So, there was no rush to remove him then?

As I recall, Kelvin escaped that crash uninjured.
