The business secretary admitted it would change Britain's coastline, and mean higher electricity bills.

Surely power bills will go down. Wind energy doesn't require expensive fuels or constant monitoring. All that is required is original construction and maintenance.

7,000 turbines off shore will cost a fortune. Remember they will have to have the strength of an off shore platform to be able to take the pounding the sea will give them.

Any repairs will be out at sea.

Sounds like a lot of hot air

Why the F don't they use old oil and/or gas platforms, instead of sinking them?

If anything can take a pounding, it's an oil platform and you can mount one huge bastard turbine on it, not to mention generate more electricity from the waves (pontoons with electric generators that turn when the wave goes past and pushes the pontoon up and down relative to the sides of the platform).

They already service oil and gas platforms at sea. That infrastructure and expertise exists and is going to go to waste, now that the oil and gas supplies are running out. Not a big deal to adapt it.

Another thing you can do is mount several turbines on a cable with a huge kite at the top. Use a weather balloon to lift it into the Jet Stream and it'll stay there forever!

You can't exactly get problems with NIMBYs out at sea ....

.... Although given the selfish, conservative attitude of some people in this country, I wouldn't be surprised if we did have those problems....

There's about 30 years more oil left in the North sea.
