More relevant because more people would care.

I will admit it is a question of perspective and maybe to a football loving young man he may well feel that to him and his peers the World Cup is more relevant or indeed more popular...

I do not wish to devalue the obvious appeal of Football... indeed as a confirmed non Football fan I do still enjoy the World Cup when it comes around, but I would argue that the Olympics is a Bigger deal for any nation to host and has a broader appeal to people around the world.

It is not a popularity contest and the fact they are both staged so as not to clash with each other shows they equally premier sporting events...

I just fail to believe that the the World Cup is 'more' relevant or indeed that more people 'care' than for the Olympics.

Football is one sport. Olympics has many sports. Something for everyone!

I've never been to a Football World Cup game, but I've been to the Olympics - and let me tell you, there was something special there, being in the host city or in the crowd at the events, with people of various nations, a real warm happy glowing feeling, that for some reason I don't think you'd get at a World Cup game.

Well you get in excess of a million people going to football matches (most probably) every week. It's the biggest sport in this country.

I hear people talking about football constantly. I don't hear people talking about swimming, athletics, gymnastics and all the other Olympic sports. Plus, the Olympics is a London event, not a nationwide event. The Worl Cup would be a nationwide event, and just about everything is in place.

Yes as I understand it the focus is indeed London... (after all it was Sydney and Seol and Atlanta etc)... however I know that various events are staged around the country... the boadting and sailing is not going to be on the river thames... <doh>

It is the nature of Olympics to be hosted by a City... that is not the same as saying the Country cannot feel part of it or benifit from it.

The olympics is just as big if not bigger than the world cup and has and will generate alot of new jobs. The olympics will bring alot more people to the country than the world cup and they will be a dammed site better behaved. I can't remeber the last time an England fan was arrest for being a hooligan at the olympics.

Not sure about as big as the world cup, the 2006 olympics had 5.9bill viewers in total while the 2004 olympics drew just under 4 bill.

I stand corrected. However I do feel that if done in the right way the olympics would bring more to Great Britian economicly and socialy than the football world cup ever would.

Fair enough, but honestly, how, in the North East, will I benefit from it?

Well I guess the most obvious benefit to any nation hosting will be tourism, people will travel to the Olympics and then tour that includes the North East.

Also although you personally may have no interest in having the Olympics on your door step many from all parts of the UK will get a chance to see it live when going to Sydney or Beijing is just not an option. that is a benefit even it you do not care to see it as such.

Does this North East tour include Middlesborough? If it does, I'd recomend a flak jacket and kevlar helmet. <sarcasm>

One thing we must remember is that although these are branded the London Olympics, the Games will in fact stretch far beyond London itself. In fact, it is rumoured that events will take place as far afield as Reading, High Wycombe and perhaps even Southend.

The correct spelling of my hometown is MIDDLESBROUGH. <grrr>

I'd also recommend taking along a handful of SAS should any visitor be foolish enough to wish to have a quiet night out in town. <roflmao>

Unless the tourists visit my house and pay me for the "pleasure" (that sounds so wrong but never mind :P) then that tourism is not going to benefit me!

What if they visit Durham University, paying good money to examine the historic site, and the university then spends that revenue on a mass spectrometer or a particle accelerator or some other expensive scientific toy, allowing you to conduct an even better research project, get an even better degree and therefore a better job in the future? :P

(Okay, so a particle accelerator might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the point remains).

I have to say I agree with Norbert on this one, particularly after the news today that Ambulance Crews are to be reduced to one crew member per vehicle.

<wtf>

That really is dodgy. How are they going to account for crew safety? I'm sure the HSE would have something to say about it as well. They disapprove of people working alone on potentially hazardous jobs.

I don't really know how it's going to work. Here is what the BBC reported yesterday.
