Having been in a very privileged position of Pit Marshal for F1 (and all the feeder series) from 1991 to date, (not to mention blagging my way into the F1 pit lane from the late 1980s) I've probably met more F1 drivers than I've had hot dinners.

How many have YOU met?

About a dozen or fifteen. But unlike your experience, WW, I met them in social settings in their post career period.

For example, Dan Gurney at Watkins Glen in 1993 while he was running the Gurney Eagle Toyota GTP team, as well as drivers Juan Fangio III and PJ Jones and some truckies (all drinking Zima as it was a free promotion).

They left there and went to Laguna Seca where we saw them again!

10 for me.

Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Keke Rosberg, John Watson, Alex Yoong, Jos Verstappen and Jan Lammers.

All except Nigel Mansell were at either Champ Car or A1 meetings.

Mansell was a bit of a funny story. I was waiting for a bus outside Exeter airport when a large car with dark tinted windows pulled up right outside the airport entrence and this bloke got out with a Ford BTCC team fleece on (it was during the brief time he drove for them in 1998), then he turned around and I saw who it was.

Nil. Although I did go to a Murray Walker book signing where I asked him if Montoya would push MS for the title. He responded that he thought JPM might have some good races, but he couldn't see anything other than title 5 for Schumacher. He was right, for a change. And his autobiog. is a good read too!

I have only met Martin Brundle at a book signing. He is a very nice chap though, in real life he comes across as quite a shy person which you don't really notice on TV.

I agree with you. He was at the GP Live weekend with Alex, his son. He's very quiet and unassuming, unlike Eddie Irvine <roflmao>

I noticed that young Alex didn't do too badly in the Formula Palmer Audi shootout last weekend.

Anyway, <topic>

I haven't met any F1 drivers, unfortunately.

None. But that doesn't bother me. What would I say to them, and what would they say to me that changed my life? Probably not a lot.

I really can't count, but it is/was a lot and almost all of them were fine gentlemen.
