An A1GP race meeting tradionally takes place over three days with Friday’s being used for a special ‘Rookie-Only’ session in the morning followed by further practice in the afternoon. Saturday hosts another practice session in the morning followed by qualifying in the afternoon. Sunday is race day with a 30-minute Sprint race held at 11am followed at 3pm by the 70-minute Feature race. Qualifying – For the 2007-08 A1GP season qualifying has undergone a complete revamp. As in previous years qualifying consists of four 15-minute segments in which every team has a single flying lap to complete. While previously A1GP took the fastest two lap times from each nation to determine an aggregate time to set the grid for the Sprint race, from 2007-08 onwards, the first two qualifying runs will take place to determine the classification of the Sprint race line-up, with only the fastest lap of the two counting, while the final two qualifying segments will be fought for the Feature race grid, again, only the fastest of the two laps counting. The new system means the grid for the Feature will no longer be related to the results of the Sprint. Starts – The Sprint race utilizes a rolling start procedure while the Feature uses a standing start format. Pit Stops – In addition to making one mandatory pit-stop in the longer Feature race, for the 2007-08 A1GP season teams will have an unknown quantity to deal with in the form of a secondary pit-stop. As standard, the teams will be required to make a pit-stop during laps 8-16 of the race but this season an additional pit-stop will be required to be taken with the pit-window for that stop only announced half an hour before the Feature race. Points – For the 2007-08 A1GP season more points than ever are up for grabs with points being awarded to the top-ten finishers in both the Sprint and the Feature races. The winner of each race will claim 15 points, second place is worth 12 points, third place ten points, fourth place eight points, fifth place six points, sixth place five points and so on until the tenth placed team which will collect one point. A further point can be earned in each race by setting the fastest lap. Consquently the maximum number of points a nation can score in a weekend is 32 (two lots of 15 points for race wins plus two points for the fastest lap in each race). Prize Money – A1GP awards prize money to the competing nations as follows: Position Sprint Race Feature Race 1st $100,000 $200,000 2nd $70,000 $130,000 3rd $50,000 $100,000 4th $35,000 $75,000 5th $30,000 $50,000 6th $20,000 $40,000 7th $15,000 $25,000 8th $10,000 $20,000 9th $7000 $13,000 10th $3000 $7000 Credit |
