Vanina Ickx Audi 1:25.972 + 2.775 From http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/61958 Autosprout reckons Mercedes may be quicker than Audi on the long runs, so we could be in for an interesting race. With Ekstrom so far down the grid it could give Tomczyk the momentum he needs to keep his title hopes alive, and Spengler could bring himself into contention, too. |

Vanina Ickx Audi + 1 Lap M.Winkelhock Audi DNS From http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/62000 All in all it was quite an interesting race, although team orders did come into play (thankfully not as blatantly as at Zandvoort). Kristensen held up Spengler and the rest of the field at the start, allowing Tomczyk to pull out a decent lead at the start. There was even talk of giving him a drive-through penalty for it, which is unbelievable - allow Premat to blatantly fix a race at Zandvoort and Audi escape punishment, but someone holds station behind their teammate (which can easily be solved by actually overtaking the errant vehicle) and they are nearly punished for it? At one point it looked as though Timo Scheider or Jamie Green could spring an upset, as they made both their stops quite early and could conceivably have leapfrogged the leaders, but in the end it was the "conventional" strategy that won the day and gave Tomczyk an easy win. Poor old Markus Winkelhock didn't have the same success at the Nurburgring in a DTM car as he did in an F1 car, being punted out before he'd even crossed the start line for the first time. And Suzie Stoddart drove surprisingly well, at one point running as high as fourth, before she was given a drive-through penalty for crossing the white line at the pit exit. There was good racing up and down the field, with Hakkinen in particular getting a bit heated on occasion, and a great duel between Bernd Schneider and Tom Kristensen at the end of the race. A good, entertaining race in my opinion. |
