the last moto gp race to be run at misano was way back in 1993 when kevin schwantz and wayne rainey were duelling for the championship.... sadly, rainey crashed whilst leading the race and the resulting slide into the graveltrap which was designed to stop cars, not bikes, flipped him over and broke his spine... the injury left him paralysed from the chest down, prematurely ending the career of not one but 2 amazingly talented and entertaining riders.schwantz lost his greatest rival and that took away the motivation to ignore the pain in his wrists and arms, meaning he would retire in 1994.. rainey has been actively involved with motogp still and was instrumental in getting laguna seca back on the calender. he is also a yamaha spokesman there are many links and youtube clips of rainey in action against his friend and rival so if you can, stop and take a look at a few.... |

I forgot that the last race at Misano was where Rainey's accident happened until I read Randy Mamola's MCN column. He won his last 500cc race there, but also said that it will be an emotional weekend for himself and Kenny Roberts. Though I don't think Schwantzy quit because Rainey wasn't there, Doohan was as stiff a challenge, but by 1995 he had so many injuries he just had to let it go. |
