http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/61881 Basic changes can be summed up as follows: QUALIFYING - Qualifying session divided into four 15-minute segments (as in 05/06 and 06/07) - Each team gets one run per session (same again) - Aggregate of times from first two sessions decides grid for sprint race - Aggregate of times from second two sessions decides grid for feature race POINTS SCORING - Points and prizes will now be the same for both races - New points system of 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the first ten finishers, with one point available for fastest lap in each race PIT STOPS - Feature race will now involve two pit stops - Pit lane will remain open during safety car periods I have mixed views about the rule changes. Personally I liked the old qualifying system - this rule means that every run you make will count towards your grid position, which to me smacks too much of the dreaded single-lap qualifying that dulled up F1 for a good few years. The new points system is a positive step as it means that drivers will be more motivated to go for the win, as there is a bigger gap between 1st and 2nd. However, having the same points and prizes for the two races doesn't make much sense to me, since one race is more than three times longer than the other. Any thoughts? |

I've gotta agree. The change in points is nice - more emphasis on winning but the rest is just rehashing failed ideas from other series. I can understand why they don't want the sprint finish to be the feature grid, since passing ain't always easy, but there are better ways than 1 laps qualifying runs to fix it. |

I've payed little attention to A1GP, but I think I understand the new rules. What I'd like to ask those who pay real attention to A1GP is this: What problems caused a rules change? And, did the rules change address these problems? Technical changes or marketing savy? I don't know. |

Hmmm. Guess we'll have to wait and see how it works in reality. Dubious about the qualifying - I reckon they should still be able to scratch a lap, especially with some of the less experienced drivers who are liable for an error or two - say have 5 qualifying laps and you can choose which one to eliminate from your total. Also have mixed feelings about the points. If one driver is regularly beating the rest of the field, like Hulk did last year, doesn't it just means the Championship is all decided earlier in the season? I guess the pitstop/safety car rules will bring in some new strategy elements, but it just means more passing will be done off track, which is many people's biggest gripe with F1 In response to Flood, I missed the end of this current season, but as far as I am aware these rule changes don't seem to be in response to a specific problem (someone else can correct me if I've missed something). |

One major thing was that A1GP was supposed to be a series where overtaking was commonplace, but that sort of lost its way towards the end of the last season. That will be the reason for shuffling the grid about a bit, and it will also be why the points system has been altered. Presumably that's why there will now be two pit stops instead of one, as well - more chances for things to go wrong, so more potential for someone to charge back through the field. |

I thought the rules were OK last season. The points system I like though. Maybe a similar scheme could be used in F1. |
