Next up is Turkey which has wildy become one of the most loved new circuits in Formula 1 by fans and the drivers alike. Turn 8 has become one of the most famous corners on the calendar, the triple apex corners really challenges the drivers as well as the physical demands it places on them due to putting them at a high number of Gs for a lengthy period of time. In terms of overtaking this is something that there is plenty of with at least 3 obvious passing places. The other interesting thing about the Istanbul speedway is that it is one of the only left handed circuits on the calendar, this really tests the driver's necks and last year many had pads in their cockpits to help. All four of the title contenders have had great moments here, Massa won his first F1 race here last season, Kimi dominated in 2005, Hamilton had that storming drive in GP2 last season after suffering a spin at the beginning of the race and Alonso drove brilliantly to beat Michael Schumacher in an under-powered car. So all four drivers like this track and are capable of winning so it promises to be a close contest. Team wise many would suggest that the layout of the Istanbul circuit will suit Ferrari better but the teams have had 3 weeks to prepare for this race so you never know what new developments each team may bring. Ferrari will be particularly wanting to win so that they can close the gap on mclaren and may choose to take more risks which may of course be a detriment to their reliability which for once has been an achilles heel this season. In qualifying it should be an even contest, in the race Ferrari will hope to have better race but one good thing for mclaren in the race is that they won't have to use the soft tyre, a tyre which their car has been very unconsistent on, however they are very close to Ferrari on the medium and the hards which will be the tyres for this weekend's race. The other factor people will be talking about is how Lewis and Alonso will get on with each other and will things spill onto the track. Ron Dennis will be trying his every effort to make sure he doesn't and that the events of Hungary are forgotten but I am sure the media will be doing their utmost to raise the tension in the Macca garage. Is anyone likely to upset the title battles at the front, seems pretty unlikely but BMW have often been quick around these types of circuits and have new developments so could well cause an upset but they are unlikely to to be challenging for victory. Furthur back Honda will be desperately be hoping their car fares better at the Istanbul speedway. So it looks like its going to be very tight at the front with all the title contenders going for broke to get into the championship fight but will someone become unstuck, who will pull off the move that makes them championship favourite. And on one of F1's new beauties in terms of race tracks it should be a thrilling F1 weekend after the usual Summer break which feels like has gone on forever. |
