Heikki Kovalainen could overtake Giancarlo Fisichella as Renault's leader in the standings should he maintain his point scoring run. They say in Formula 1that the first person you need to beat is your team-mate and in the last few races, Heikki Kovalainen has been doing just that. Returning from a three-week summer break, Kovalainen goes to Turkey on a solid run of form that has seen him score in all but one of the last six races, scoring a total of 13 points in those events compared to team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella's four. It all combines to put the Finn just a single point behind the Italian, making the Turkish Grand Prixmore significant for Renault than they would lead you to believe. Link |

Fisi needs to stay ahead of Kovalainen if he is going to get a seat for next year, in my opinion. |

I disagree. I think Kovalainen needs to beat Fisi if he wants to be taken seriously as an F1 driver. Fisichella will probably keep his seat regardless of whether or not Kovalainen beats him, because his role at the Renault team is "experienced rear-gunner" rather than title challenger. Kovalainen, though, needs to prove that he is something special ahead of a good yardstick like Fisi if he wants to get himself noticed. |

I see your point, but Kovalainen is in his rookie year, and Fisi would have been expected to beat him. Kovalainen has made a lot of rookie mistakes too, so if Fisi still fails to beat him, his position must be under scrutiny. |

Fisi beat Kovalainen comfortably in the first half of the year, and has now fallen back relative to him, which I think is what most people would have expected. I don't see Fisi's seat being under threat for next year - he did a worse job (relatively speaking) in 2005 and 2006 and still kept his place. |

That is really a different matter. Alonso was double world champion and had been at Renault before Fisi got there so was already de facto team leader. This time, Fisi will have been expected to beat Heikki, at least in his first season anyway, having been at Renault for 2 years before Heikki arrived. |

I agree with Red Andy in that Heikki has to beat Fisi to be taken seriously as a F1 driver. Fisichella is a good yardstick for a rookie driver and if Heikki has something special like an Alonso or a Raikkonen type driver then he needs to be beating Fisi by a substantial margin in my opinion. I think Fisi and Heikki will remain Renault's drivers next season, this will be the year that determines whether Heikki will remain in F1 for 10 years in the midfield like Panis for example or whether he can join F1's elite. However I stand by what I said about Heikki in my arcticle a few days ago, I just don't think he has that same spark like Rosberg, Kubica, Hamilton and already established names like Alonso and Kimi. However I am always happy for drivers to prove me wrong and they have done in the past but thats my honest opinion at this stage. |

Renault won't keep Fisichella - they say he's useless during test sessions and lazy at race weekends. He will be DUMP DUMP DUMPED.
