"Nice" Champ Car drivers don't do well in F1; is there a link? How will Bourdais do?

There seems to be a strong inverse relationship between the niceness of the Champ Car champion and his odds for success in Formula One. Those who’ve ranked high on the rootability meter – Cristiano da Matta and Alex Zanardi – fared poorly in Formula One. Those who’ve won – Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve – were whiny little jerks.

And now here comes Sebastien Bourdais, who seems to be as nice as they come. It may just be the glasses, which could very well hide a temperamental egomaniac ready to ascend to the highest pantheon of Formula One greatness. But I’m not holding my breath.

<snip>

I’m guessing that Bourdais is being hired by Red Bull to serve as a solid barometer to judge Vettel. And Bourdais doesn’t sound like he’s under any illusions:

“That’s something you have to accept at some point. In the meantime, I wasn’t going to make it at Ferrari or McLaren or any of the top teams, it looks like. I was getting very close to the end of my (time) window when Toro Rosso called and said, `Well, we’d like you to test our cars.’ Obviously, I was interested.”

I would definately have Bourdais in the whiny category tbh.

Nice thought Mrs S!

Montoya and Villeneuve showed when they came into F1 that they were prepared to ruffle a few feathers in order to be successful, whereas Zinardi and Da Matta didn't quite stamp their authority on the sport.

From the impression I get of Bourdais is that he is a nice guy away from the track, but on the track he is a very competitive driver who isn't afraid to get aggressive to win. Although he won't win with Toro Rosso he could display the characteristics to get him to the top, like Alonso, Schumacher, Senna and others before him

Yup his moaning after getting beaten by Doornbos early in the season was stupid, RD was clearly quicker yet he made up some crap about him moving 3 times across the track i couldnt see more than 1. I wait for his arrival with baited breath but i think he will do a bad job <yes>

Paul Tracy on Bourdais
Quote:

He's a super talented driver," said PT at Edmonton. "There's no question of his ability to bring his team around him and get the best from them, himself and his car.

"His drawback is his personality. He rubs people up the wrong way, be it fans or competitors - rival drivers, rival team managers. I understand that he's a perfectionist, but you've gotta try and be a good winner and a good loser.

"And he's often not happy even when he wins. He's always got something to complain about. So if he doesn't win it's triple misery!

"That's the only flaw I can see in him, though. His ability to qualify a car, his ability to get the laps out of a car when he needs to in qualifying or race is as good as anyone I've ever seen in this series, so we're talking Mansell, Mears, Montoya, Unser, Andretti.

The problem is Torro Rosso are not likely to do anything, in fact he'll be lucky if he even scores a single point. I guess he sees it as a stepping stone to Red Bull if DC retires.

DC will never retire, he is like the Queen Mother - going on and on and on until he's just an embarrassment to everybody. <sarcasm> <peek>

Queen Mother is dead, don't you mean the queen who won't give way to Prince Charles?

Unless you know something we don't, perhaps she's holed up with Elvis.

Bet the great grand kids had a good laugh when granny came over. Do you think she brought them pocket money at the weekends and had them sleep over?

Sorry, thought perhaps you were living some kind of fantasy in which she was still alive and Jenson Button was leading the WDC, maybe a shrine somewhere.

I thought the queen mother spent all her time drinking gin and betting on the trotskis.
